I'm puzzled as to how a new nylock nut, on clean dry threads, properly torqued and in the correct orientation could walk back on its own. In any event, I'll crawl under my car and have a look.

My point to the OP was that ordinary nuts were not appropriate in this application.

I used new nuts and a couple of new bolts and I never had to look at them again.

Can someone further explain the driveshaft alignment procedure? "Straight" how? In what axis? Does straight mean parallel to something?

What he's doing there with that jig is checking alignment of the two shaft sections in relation to each other.

Front and rear shafts should be properly aligned with each other or vibration/noise can occur.

An imaginary line extended from centerline of shaft along its longitudinal axis would also be centerline thru the other shaft if they are properly aligned. 

The tool is just a straight edge with 4 equal height spacer blocks.
