By “late model”, I’m guessing you mean a square taillight speedometer (cross-hairs face), 1974-1976. If your car is a ‘76 California version, the speedometer was originally geared for a 3.64 differential, just like any ‘74 or ‘75 U.S. model. But if your car is a ‘76 49-states version, it might have speedometer geared for a 3.90 differential, or, like mine, it might have a speedometer marked for a 3.90 but actually having gearing for a 3.64...

 

There are also lots of threads on fixing speedometers, as they’ve always been a weak point.

@Conserv thanks for the info. It's a '76 California car so it sounds like anything 74-75 will work.

 

I've been through the threads and was planning on replacing the gears on my odometer, but as show in the thread linked below, i've got a rather uncommon issue.
