Help! Car still turns over after engine stalls

Hi all,

Spent a few days washing the engine bay and then wrapping and cleaning up wiring.

Bundled lots of wires that were not previously bundled but think I got everything back where it should go.

Car was running fine but now does not run well (may or may not be related) but after it stalls/dies it continues to try and turn over!!! (See end of video)

Because of my wrapping chasing wire colors is going to be a real PITA - any thoughts what would be causing this turn over with key in 'on' but not rotated to 'starter engaged' position?

Thanks

Sam

A little more specific information...when you say

Do you mean the starter is engaging and trying to restart the motor, or is is running on its own, just kinda halfheartedly (can't access your video).  If the latter, there may be two explanations:

1.  It's "dieseling" or running on.  That's usually caused by a hot spot in one or more cylinders that's igniting unburned fuel left in the cylinders when you turn off the ignition.  Those glowing hot spots (often bits of carbon) will ignite the gas, the same way a diesel engine's glow plug functions.  Thus the term "dieseling."  Lowering your idle speed (if it's above 1000 rpm) will help.

2.  Somehow you've crossed a wire that is hot all the time (even with the ignition off) with a wire that's only hot with the ignition on, and it's back-feeding to the ignition circuit, providing just enough current to halfheartedly fire the spark plugs.  I had this happen with a VW beetle that had a defectivelight bulb whose brake light filament touched the tail light filament.  Since the tail lights work with the ignition off, so long as I kept my foot on the brake the engine would continue to run...barely.  Foot off the brake and it stopped.  Took me awhile (and a story in a 1937 Popular Science magazine) to figure that one out...

I also noticed than in addition to the main '6mm?' connections on the starter there are three mail spade connections. Two at 6 o'clock ish and one at 12 o'clock.

I did not get good pre disassembly pics but currently have female spades on both the lower spade connections and nothing at 12 o'clock.

Did some reading on this site and ended up tracing the loom that came from the general direction of the coil and moved its connection from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock.

Bingo! :)

Saved from my own stupidity yet again!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
