1974 2002 Ti

Hey all,

Recently found this forum and been reading quite a bit to learn about these cars. I’m in the market for one right now but do not know as much as I would like to.

 

I recently found a 1974 2002 that is badged as a TI which I’m not sure were brought to the US when in production.

 

Upon inspection of the engine I noticed that it only had one carb and that the only number I could locate on the engine were “20A”

 

Can anyone lend some insight and knowledge?

The 1600ti was manufactured from late 1967 to late 1968. The 2002ti was manufactured from late 1968 to early 1971, and was “replaced” by the 2002tii in April 1971. All ti’s are pre-Modell 71 cars, meaning they were manufactured before the substantial “face lift” in April 1971. They are, thus, all round taillight cars, without original knee mouldings, bumper rub strips, or “long” rear bumpers. None were imported by BMW into the U.S. — a few wound up here by other means. Therefore, all were originally Euro-market cars, meaning, for instance, they all had the chrome-trimmed dashboards “outlawed” by the U.S. DOT in 1968.

 

BMW Group Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.inc) can provide, free of charge, the model (2002, 2002ti, 2002tii), market (U.S., Euro), manufacturing date, date of legal delivery to importer or dealer (depends on country of delivery), original exterior color, and color code. Just email them the VIN and request their data on the car.

 

Original engines were numbered to match the car’s VIN. A “20 A” sounds possibly like a remanufactured replacement engine, but we’d have to see the engine number boss (above the rear of the starter) and/or the full context of that “20 A”.

 

If you want to knowledgeably buy an ‘02 — as opposed to wandering blindly into a purchase — start by reading Mike McCartney’s book on ‘02 restoration. Not perfect, and a bit dated by now, but a great starting point!
