Transmission help

Roark

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Can anyone shed some light on my transmission please?
I have multiple part numbers on it and would like to know if I should be shopping for a new one or if mine would be usable (if in working order)

I have found the following numbers in the unit and try to describe where they appear:

240.0.0370.90 (side of bell housing)
3.1 (inside bell housing)
225 (inside bell housing)
270067 BMO (rim of bell housing)

240.0.0366.91 (prop shaft side)
225 (prop shaft side)
3.2 (prop shaft side)

For my new build I would like the 5 speed upgrade. Would this be ok? I can’t seem to find anything that looks like a mechanical speedo so what would my options be for the speedo/odo?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Presume this is the tranny that came out of your '02...all the numbers you quote in your question are casting numbers, not the part number.

From the outside appearance it's a 4 speed that probably came either from an E21 or from a 1600 as it has a 3 bolt guibo flange.  '02s had a four bolt flange.  However...see below for another possibility.

Is there anything wrong with it now?  Bad second gear synchro?  That's a common problem on 4 speeds, especially the pre-71 boxes with Porsche-style synchros.

In your last picture there appears to be a black bolt in silhouette in the 5 o'clock position.  That's where the speedo cable would go, through a hole in the housing with a retainer clip held by that bolt.  If the hole is plugged, that tranny is from an E30 318 ('84 or 85) that used the M10 engine. You'll need to see if there's a drive gear beneath it.  If not, you'll need to rig up a GPS speedometer/odometer, or take the back of the case apart and install the speedometer drive gear.

If you want a 5 speed (and can find a good one), it's a reasonably easy install--Lotsa stuff in the archives on that project.

Thanks for the quick response Mark  and Mike,

@Mark92131 thanks for that link, mine seems to look like the Getrag 240 (second one) in the article.

@mike it was given to me with my project car, motor in pieces in box and the transmission as you see it, so I have no idea if anything is wrong with it or if anything is right with it. If there is a possibility of adding the speedo gear I will definitely try that I will look to get a clearer shot of where you mentioned.

I own a ‘71 1600. It’s my daily driver and since I’m building this project car (my wife bought me) I thought a five speed upgrade would be a good option. The PO told me it’s a five speed but I can’t take his word for it.

Is there a definitive way of identifying a 5 speed? Is it only by the guibo flange?

Ok, so further reading of that article, chargin gives the pros to using a 240 as being a lot cheaper than a 245 also in that comment, he show his build where the guibo flange is also 3 bolt. (Mines clearly not a 245)

Because of the number 240.0.0370.90 on the outside of my bell housing does the 240 mean it’s a 240? Does this mean it’s a 5 speed?

thanks!

If a date helps the identification, I see an April 1990 casting date inside the bell housing (4 nubs surrounding “90/91”) and a vague 1988-89 date on the rear housing cover.

Regards,

Steve

Looks to me like a Getrag 240 from an M42, mainly because it has the ears above the shift rod.

I don't know if the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same or not (I don't think it is)

It's E30 by the rear dual mounts.

From the casting dates, I agree that you should first

check that it will mate to an m10.

It might be a 'replacement' part- but it's more likely from

a 318i/s with an M42.  Which won't mate to an m10.

It will mate to an m20, m54, or m42, tho.

Bell housing doesn't look correct for the M10. It needs to look like this from the front. Starter bulge is bigger.Yes its a 5 speed.

It still blows my mind that there isn’t a definitive part number or inscription that tells you what gearbox it is let alone wether it’s a 4 or 5 speed?! How difficult is it to cast/scribe a 4 or 5? Or even the gear pattern.

Then I thought, maybe it’s my sh$$ty photos, so I took some more, as most of you said, most likely an e30 (5speed) but not the correct (bolt pattern) early one either....

Likely hood of finding a cost effective 245 is slim, will probably be in the hunt for the easier to find, cheaper 240 and sacrifice a speedo.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
