Unpopular 2002 opinions: Round 1

As mentioned many times, one of my favorite parts of the 2002 community is how accepting members are of opposing view points (even if they disagree).  In this spirit, we all have opinions that seem to go against the main grain.

Here's a couple of mine to start:

1) The stock-height 2002 looks better than a lowered 2002.

2) All 2002's should be hot rodded, a stock 2002 is a waste.

#1 is in conflict with #2, but you are seriously mistaken with #2.  I happen to like a thoughtful hot rod , which by its very nature must be lowered a tad. And Although some may find more value in hot rodding mods , a serious collector would not .

Not sure this qualifies for this thread, as that's just a fact, not really an opinion

Two of my favorite upgrades on my car, but I certainly admit I'd think twice about doing them today! The prices, especially on LSDs, have really gotten out of hand!

This brings me to my against-the-grain opinions:

1.) I think the main one is I hate to see 2002 values (including my own car) climb.  I don't want my car to get more valuable, I want 2002s to be a dime a dozen forever! (Wishful thinking, I know!)

2.) A/C just doesn't belong in a 2002.  It wasn't meant to have it, it doesn't fit well, and is best left off.

3.) BMW 2002 > Porsche 911.  I'll back this up as I've lived with both in relatively the same conditions at the same time.  The 2002 got used more, and yielded an overall significantly higher ratio of smiles-to-curses than the 911! (And that's with $ not withstanding!)

You would have to consume 2 barrels of pilsener commarad to believe # 3. This from an owner of both (presently and back in the day)...and #2 isn’t so backward

Ha, well, that's just like …. your opinion, man... and the whole point of this thread!  Please don't be the one guy who doesn't get what's going on here.

Speaking of which, since you are participating in here already, let's hear your backwards thoughts!

I'm glad that BMW 02 were built with only 1/3rd of the cars having a sunroof, because a 2002 with out a sunroof is just a parts car so I'll have parts forever?

If everybody in the room is thinking the same thing, then someone is not thinking.

No , really I get it ....just needed to set the record straight (straighter?) on a couple of backward or against-the-grain opinions lest I not be able to sleep tonight ? ...which reminds me it is 4 hours later than   Cali time. But for a backward opinion, amateur restorers should practice on an 02 before tackling one of the more collectible German marques....it’s less expensive.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
