trim installation help / diagrams

Hello,  

Just signed up after taking ownership of a 73tii.  seems to be a nice car that runs and rides well but I have a few little jobs before I can register it in my country (switzerland).

 

While I'm waiting, I'm in the process of installing new bumpers and sill/rocker lower trim strips.  I have a pack of installation hardware for front and rear bumpers (euro spec bumpers) but its not that clear to me where each bolt and washer should be used.  is there a diagram somewhere?

 

next problem is the 3 strips of grey rubber seal for the stainless lower side trim.  where exactly do they go?  the old ones that I removed had no rubber seals at all.

To the upper edge of that trim piece. Between trim and chassis sealing that gap.

Thanks!  Those are now on.  The seals are not particularly tight but seems ok.

 

Seems like I need to drill new holes in the rear fenders to mount the euro rear bumper as the bumper irons bring it closer to the car and hence the side bolts need to be further forward.  Is that expected?  

 

I’m also struggling to fit the new bumper rubber to the assembed bumper.  It’s about an inch too short.

 

and can anyone point me to place to order the rubber seal around the center grill section?  Mine is perished and looks bad.

Congrats on the new ownership   It now starts......

 

There isn't a rubber seal around the frt center grill, someone may have put one on to keep the grill from the paint but that is not original. There are 2 plastic inserts that are used to do this    Use the search button and lots will come up about this

 

Download Realoem BMW parts diagrams onto your desk top, this will become your late night friend .    This will give a decent break down of parts, at least, start you in the right direction.   Get one of the " blue " binder repair manuals if you are going to do any of your own work.  The cars are not really that difficult to work on.   Lot's of good info here , just sift through it.

With RealOEM.com, you need to select “Classic” not “Current” as the Catalog, and for pre-1974 cars, you will not enter your car’s VIN, but will define your car by series, model, body style (Sedan), market (Euro vs. U.S.), month of manufacture.

As mentioned above, the rubber seal around the center grill wasn't found on 2002s.  I believe E9s or E24s used one at one time.  I use a piece of black vacuum line split down its length.  You could also use the vinyl strips that fit between the bumper & overriders.  It came in black & silver - I only see silver now: Synthetic strip - SILBER (from 03/1966 to 07/1977) - part # 51-11-1-816-063

Rear bumper done.  Starting to look better.  Had to drill all new holes for it. 

 

Next up new wheels, free form headlights and front bumper (waiting on one new iron for that).

I had the same problem.  I ended up needing to drill a couple holes at the end of the bumpers to get it work.  Once done, you can’t notice any real difference.

That would have been easier.  I ended up stretching it to fit by installing both ends with one corner bumper removed and then levering the corner piece into place on the center piece. Was rather difficult but it seems to fit together nicely now it’s in place.
