Replace it is NFG    you will have a leak    Dig inside and make sure that there is not a couple already in there, some techs get lazy and just pound a new one in

Bringing this back from the dead.  I'm having a leak from this seal.  Wouldn't having two plus seals in there help stop leaks?

Its a common practice to install a new seal on top of a leaking one. The cavity will hold a few of them.

Fishing the old seal out can be difficult and easy to scratch/damage the seal area on the shifter shaft or aluminum housing. Theres not a lot of area to work with and with the trans still up in the car......

As Stephers recommends, make sure the shift shaft is clean and smooth. Apply a thin coat of something  to lube it slightly as well

I'll revive this thread with my current seal replacement observations:

1) Put in new Elring seal after attempting to remove leaking seal.  (Yes, tapped new seal in after pushing the offending seal back into cavity about 1/8".   New seal still seeped from outside at housing (not shaft.)   I ordered a Corteco seal and noticed the outer rubber seal is at the bottom of the seal vs. Elring ribs further towards the top of seal.  I packed in some polymer grease before installing the new seal (suggestion from a local Indy old-timer)   So far so good.

2) I wasted $150 on a BMW #230 210 manual trans. shift seal tool alleged to work on Getrag 245 seals BUT it was too short (second pic.)   The #6 x 1" machine screw with visegrip managed to eventually remove the leaking seal.

Installation tip for this seal- use the old spacer from the 2002 front subframe (lower control arm inner bolt spacer) to tap the new one in place. Fits perfectly over the shift rod.

@jgerock - Thanks for this tip, worked perfectly for me. I spent 30 min trying to find the right size tube and luckily had a spare control arm.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
