FORD type 9 gearbox to the BMW engines

Recommended Posts

I am planning to manufacture a bell housing to install a FORD type 9 gearbox to the BMW engines.

It is a request from a Japanese classic BMW specialist.

In Japan, getrag 245 is not easily obtained.

However, many customer want the 5-speed.So I decided to install a different gearbox.

Now I have an estimate of the bellhousing production, but is likely to be very expensive.

It may be less expensive to manufacture overseas than in Japan.

More transmission options are better than less transmission options. Where will this be available to purchase?

If you make the bellhousing large enough to hold a 240mm clutch, M30 guys could easily use this In addition to M10.

The type 9 gearbox is adopted for many British kit cars, and various gear ratios are prepared.

Also the size and the position of shift lever do not change very much with getrag245.

Type9 gearbox bolt pattern is compatible with many racing transmissions.

This bell housing is designed with a 240mm clutch.

Until you are ready because there is no sales experience to overseas it will be sold only in Japan.

Another option is to make an adapter plate to use the e36 gearbox.  I know Ernie Bellos (Bellos Motorsports in West Palm, FL) has made such a plate.  His argument was that the e36 boxes were plentiful (cheap), strong, and available in a bunch of desirable gearings.

I would think a T-5 or E36/E46 trans adapter would sell much better in the US.

I don't think the type 9 and T5 are 100% the same but, I could be wrong.

At first made an adapter plate.

However, I judged that the strength was insufficient due to the bolt pattern problem.

Red is the bolt pattern of M10 engine, black is E36 transmission bolt pattern.

Also, there is no speedometer gearbox and the speedometer will not operate.

This is illegal in Japan.

Is that the Sierra Cossie?

Specifically that diagram is from a XR4X4 manual but yes, same transfer case and front diff arrangement as the Cosworth

Someone needs to make an adapter or bellhousing to use T5s or Miata transmissions on the M10.

When using one of these adapter plates, how do you ensure the tip of the input shaft is in the correct axial position to stab into the pilot bearing?  It looks like KEP sells them as flywheel + pilot bearing + adapter plate, so are they providing a custom flywheel that fits within the adapter plate and has the proper depth for the input shaft?  I know Advanced often sells their adapter plate kits with a new input shaft.

If we wanted to do one for an M10 to a T5 or Miata, someone would have to work out whether the input shaft is even close to the right length, correct?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
