E21 Recaro Help

What model Recaro’s were in E21 that we use in 02? I see many use LX Recaro’s but they’re from mid 80’s. I’m looking for the fist Recaro’s fitted in E21. I have the LX Recaro’s in my E28 but they don’t look anything like my E21 Recaro’s.

What model E28? Those are rare, especially in USA market.

Here are some pics of the seats off my e21 built in August 1978. They don't have the recaro tag to identify seat model but it may be a good reference. JD ,, those are genuine e21 ,,  they were refere as ''Sport Seat''  no official Recaro tagging.

The e28 are looking pretty much the same,, Xcepy the seatbelt receiver being different .

Mine but recovered,,  and lost the BMW logo

Here is picture of my tii Recaro. It came with the car. They’re currently being reupholstered again due to damage. As you can note, it has no front extenders. The only similar Recaro’s I remember was in my late 70’s 911 that I sold long time ago.

i recently found this will scanning a VW site. Looks to me like the e21 recaros would be considered an LXC version. There are 3 types of e21 recaros used in the e21s, most noticeable differences are in the recline knobs.

Hi,

 

factory sport seats in E21 have all been Recaro Idealsitz N. Some details - mainly visible the cover materials if still original - differ from the aftermarket Recaro types that were also available back in the days.

 

For E12, E24 and early E30 the same Idealsitz N was available, too, before BMW switched to another type of own factory sport seats. E23 and E28 I don't have enough experience with for a definitive statement. For some time in the 80s Recaros and another type of factory sport seats were avaible at BMW concurrently for some models - parts catalogues and sales brochures distinguished between "Sportsitz" and "Sportsitz Recaro" then.

 

For aftermarket Idealsitz N the extendable lower leg support was an option for extra $$$ (as was lordosis support, Recarofonie headrests with integrated speakers, Netzkopfstütze headrests and heating). The BMW Idealsitz Ns always came with that support.

 

Production of Idealsitz N started in about 1973 while for about two or three years the production of the earlier Idealsitz (the nowadays unobtanium ones that were also a factory option for early Porsche 911) still continued. The Ns underwent two facelifts in 1977 (Idealsitz N (77)) and 1981 (Idealsitz N (81)), which besides the different reclining wheels mainly consisted of reinforcement for some parts of the seat frames, and production ended in about 1989/90.

 

For early E21s (75/76) sport seats were not available as an option in the standard BMW sales program. You could have only ordered them through the special sales program of the Motorsport GmbH (covers in special M-stripes cloth or black corduroy). From 77 on BMW themselves started selling them, too, but for the first year (maybe year and a half) they were only available in combination with E21 black leatherette. Later on all interior colors and cloth were available, too.

 

The different Recaro LX were introduced in 1984. Those do still look quite similar, but they are a totally new type of seat with completely different framework and hinge mechanism. Except of some mix-types produced in small numbers in the late 80s besides the hinges one can distinguish N from LS by looking at the underside: Ns do show single elastic straps while LXs have one-piece rubber mats (Pirellimatte).

 

The roundel printed on the sides is an indicator for earlier BMW Idealsitz N, that's correct. From somewhen in 1979 the roundel disappeared and the headrests got a print on their undersides. In cars with factory leather option neither the roundel nor the tag was used. Late E24 Idealsitz Ns don't have the headrest tag anymore either with leatherette or cloth interiors.

Thanks this was insightful. I’m still unsure about my seats thought. The side model details on the plastic cover indicates L/LX/LS. I’ve email a picture to 911 forum and they’re confident it’s an early 911 seat but I was told it came from early e21. Maybe the owner of said e21 swapped his seats with these prior to selling his car.

It's not.

After 1968 no Standard Recaro aftermarket Seat was OE on Porsche.
So If you go through the Recaro Sport seats (not talking standard seats as they were produced too by Recaro)
Idealsitz from 68 -> on Special model for Porsche
Tombstones -> Special for Porsche
Standard Seat 74 -> -> Special for Porsche

Turbo Seat -> Special for Porsche

All newer seats have an integrated headrest btw.

Even the more modern GRP buckets have their own Recaro part# although most of them are identical to the standard.
