Making a carb switch 32/36 to a 38/38.

Let us know how you like it. I just sync-linked my 32/36 then added a 123ignition bluetooth dizzy. Still tuning both but I love to growl of the weber with the sync-link. It sounds faster ?

I ended up rebuilding my 32/36 and installing the sync link. Which really turned the 32/36 into a fun carb but did have that initial hiccup on fast throttle demand. There is a pause and a lag followed by sudden response (which was expected and takes getting used to) with the sync link kit installed.

And Nick is right about the change in fuel consumption with the 38/38. It was very poor. Went down to something like 16 mpg in the city.

 

I just installed sync-link on my stock '73 with a weber 32/36. I don't notice a hiccup. I'm running what's listed below. It's an old carb and I have not seen any mention on 2002faq about venturi sizes. The venturis I list below are what was in it when I got the car.

A Redline Weber representative informed me the other day via email that manual-choke 32/36s are shipped with different emulsion tubes than automatic choke models. He didn't differentiate between water and electric models but we were speaking in the context of my water choke model.

 

I'm going to ask him to elaborate on the difference between the tubes and why they're different. When discussing calibration configurations here it may be valuable to clarify which model you have and if you know whether the choke was switched out or not.

I've got DGAV. It is now an electric choke. I'm not sure it always was. In fact, It doesn't look like any other DGAV I've ever seen. It seems cannibalized from somewhere else.

 

In the top left of the attached image you can see the accelerator pump. I haven't been able to figure out what the other vacuum chamber thing shown in the lower left of the picture is? It has the small black hose plugged into it that comes off the carb base plate. (2 pics follow)

crap.  I ran across an explanation of that fitting (across from the accelerator pump), but forgot what it did.  


I do know it was used on Ford engines, like the Cortina, Capri and Escort.

 

If your venturis (ies?) are not snug fitting, you can shim them with little bits snipped off of an aluminum can (the side without the hole, of course).  At least that trick worked for me.  The can I used was .004" thick, but they do vary.

 

EDIT:

DGAV is typically a water choke, as you mention, but it is an easy swap to electric.  Not so easy to go from manual to either, or vice versa... so I've read.

The vacuum doohickey on the side seems to be related to OEM fitment of the carb to Fords and perhaps a few other manufacturers.

 

It’s called an ‘anti stall diaphragm’ but I am not sure how it works. When the engine speed is pulled down, vacuum will decrease and then... not sure ?

I got the carb on and it screams for a little 4 banger. The throttle linkage from Ireland Engineering worked great. I had no idea this carb would make that much difference. The 32/36 was old and worn out and the 38/38 is brand new so I did expect some improvement but not as much as it did. I had no idea this car was this quick. I know now. Tomorrow I’m getting the front end aligned after new front end kit. I need motor mounts. The fan is crashing into the radiator.
