Dolomites and 02's, oh my

Not sure it was ‘Triumph engineers’ who ‘figured out’ that the area of 4 valves was better than the area of 2 valves but there you go. A good solid review with only the barest trace of nationalism. 

 

I wanted a Dolomite Sprint for years and a near neighbour of mine in Adelaide, living a dozen houses away down my street has one slowly sinking into the ground at the back of his house. I pleaded with him to either sell it (to me of course) or at least get it onto concrete and under cover. Triumphs, like all British cars of that era, were rusting while they came off the production line. This guy would laugh and tell me he was going to get around to restoring it one day (as the weeds grew around it). Not sure there will be anything left to restore by the time he realises.

It may well be. The engine, or at least the lower end, is actually a SAAB slant 4 design similar to the engine in the 90 / 900 (but installed the right way around of course). Not sure whether the engines were assembled at Triumph’s factory. They may have been bought in assembled from elsewhere though I am sure the head was designed by Triumph.

I have a Triumph TR4A, when I stripped the original paint off I found raindrops of rust across the body...so it was rusting when it went *into* the factory....

did wikipedia tell you it was the other way round with triumph supplying engines to saab ?.

I recall that Triumph & Saab independently developed slant 4 engines and Ricardo's, the automotive engineering consultancy, had knowledge of both programs and introduced them to each other.

Of course the M10 was far superior [obligatory BMW content]

I had a 1958 Triumph TR3, one of the most fun rides I ever had except in the rain....
