Getting ready for road trips in 2019.

Scott Aaron and I had the very same impulse: getting our 2002s delivered to Reggie's Motor Works for some off-season maintenance. Mike Self and I took advantage of some decent weather recently: Mike was driving my 02 and I drove my Mini to Noblesville, IN. It gave Mike a chance to notice anything that might not be 100% with my car during that trip. We like the fact that our 02s are not left out in the winter muck. Better yet, they will both soon be ready for a busy driving season!

Last night, the RGB Off-Season Dinner was postponed with extreme prejudice: the restaurant caught on fire last week and the weather here last night was absolutely horrid. I am sure the weather was rough in Noblesville, IN as well, so I am pleased that Reggie and crew have my 02 tucked in safe and sound. The guys who went to Greer, SC instead (Jason Gipson, Andrew Wilson, Rob Siegel and many others...) THEY had the right idea!

And Wolfgang is on his way to the Foundation museum for the upcoming Passion Car exhibit.  Looking forward to visiting him at Vintage in May.

Mike- what's that all about? Haven't heard about that exhibit.  Looks like I will miss out again.

I'm guessing you are going to get your car back a little sooner than I am!  Looks like lots of work to be done on mine.

Scott

Yeah. Mine: speedometer repair, 5 new tires, a new thermostat, an oil change and then troubleshooting a cold start issue.....

Good luck with yours, Scott!

Like to what extent? Head pulling?

That will come later, Jim, lol.  Maybe I'll even try that one myself (gulp).  Or maybe I'll farm it out to you.  :)

We're looking at the chassis, figuring out what rust remediation needs to be done, then going after the worst of it (hopefully all of it).  The driver's side rocker needs to be done, maybe the passenger rocker, and I want to make sure the front frame rails are solid.  There is some corrosion behind each of the four wheels, and the spare tire well.  So there is pretty much to do (I'm giving you the abbreviated list - there is a list of other things, too).

The car was a daily until about 1989, so that is 17 years of regular use.  I'm trying to catch this stuff before it gets really bad.  The driver's rocker IS really bad.  That's what made me get off the dime and face reality.  No sense in having a nice car with a nice engine, orig interior, and serviceable paint job, if it is on a spongey foundation.  I had to save the car once, so this is the second go 'round.

Thanks, Jim.  It is definitely going to be an adventure.

What tires are you going to get?  Jason got those really great ones, but I think they are 13".  Your wheels are 14" aren't they?

Scott:  I was given the choice of Pirelli ($$$) or Kumho tires ($$). Thriftily, I chose the Kumho tires. Size: 185 70 R13.  My spare tire is exceedingly dry-rotted. To make the new tire fit into the spare tire well, it is going to be OEM skinny, but at least it will be new and capable of holding air without failing immediately!

Mike was (of course) wondering why I was getting new tires.... They are over 10 years old and showing stress cracks all over the place! He has tires going back to the Truman administration!! (and darn proud of it)

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
