1976 02, looking to clean this engine a bit. Below are pics of two hose that rear distributor vacuum with a bolt at the end closing it off. Is there an alternative to getting rid of this hose? The last pic is a wire type plug that goes from the engine through the fire wall. What is it ? And it’s so long previous owner wrapped it around the plug wires in an attempt to keep the plugs together. Thanks for the help.

Vacuum cap at the manifold will eliminate that hose.

I don't see any plug wires. If you are talking about the spring

wrapped sensor wire in the second picture... no clue. Trace it through

the firewall and see what it's going to.

I don't give a fird gen, carbretted, alyoominiuhm, tickity boo!... wiff an ole in the boot!

That wire wrapped cable is to a sensor in the manifold that is part of the emissions system. The wire protects it as it goes over the hot engine cover. If you live in a state without emissions testing you should remove all the the emissions equipment. Makes the car run better and really cleans up the engine bay.

From what I can tell from comparing my engine to online pics, most if not all of the emissions have been removed. This one wire in the pic, if it’s emmissions related then I will remove it.

As a matter of fact there is. There is one of those 3 gauge set up in the glove box. It’s not hooked up, or working.

I'd be willing to bet this leads to it. If you don't plan to keep it you could either pull the sensor and plug the port or just snip the wire at the base of the sensor and leave it in place.

Or fix the gauge. Either way, I would trace it back to confirm before messing with it.

Pretty sure that that sensor just screws into a web in the manifold between the runners and is open at the bottom. In the factory arrangement that holds a switch that (opens / closes) at   17 degrees C ambient air temperature.

I traced it back to those gauges in my glove box. I want to remove it. Any suggestions on what to use to plug that hole, and size the hole is?

You could probably remove the sensor and bring it into Napa and get a brass fitting / plug... Probably.

If you're referring to the armored cable that's screwed into the manifold, that threaded opening doesn't go into any of the manifold runners so it can be removed without leaving a massive vacuum leak. You can just unbolt it and then thread the cable back through the hole in the firewall and remove the gauge cluster. 

 

However, if you cut that cable you will ruin the gauge, as it's mechanical.  That cable is actually a tube with a fluid inside that expands as it's heated, moving the needle on the gauge.  Cut the cable and the fluid runs out.  You really don't need a second temperature gauge as the factory one is actually quite accurate, so long as it's properly grounded.
