Have done this many times   It is not hard    Some advice from and old phart : 

 

1   Iron the headliner before installing   Do not think you can pull out all the wrinkles you cannot.  Putting headliner in too much tension will come back to haunt you

 

2   After a bad batch of heat sealed pleats I run a stitch down every seam before installing   They don't make things the way they used to

 

3   Be patient.   Don't rush     Keep your hands and fingers clean with lacquer thinner   Be patient

 

4    Use brush on glue   I have good luck with Welwood and those 89 cent brushes from HD    Spray glue is way to hard to control    I have also used vinyl top glue too but that is hard to find in small cans

 

5   Be Patient and in a good mood    Keep your hands and fingers clean   Don't rush

 

6    Toby's advise is good     

 

7    Use lots of binder clips to get it generally positioned all the way around, then start gluing on opposite sides, front and rear     Do small sections and do not pull too tight as you will end up with wrinkles in the corners

 

8   Final advise    BE PATIENT, keep your hands and fingers clean and don't rush    No need to hurry

 

If I can do it anyone can

  Just to add my thoughts.

Mike NC is right about each point.

i have only done two headliners and i

kept my hours logged. it took 32 hours

to move a good headliner from one car

to another, install time only, with sunroof.

the none sunroof car was a new panel

and it took 19 hours. i watched that video

from 32minutes until they stopped showing

the install. that was scary. i work from back

to front with both cars and for the sunroof

car i finish the hole before i get to the front

windshield frame. i actually use wood clothes

pins and binder clips with blue masking tape

on the inside of each to protect from marks and

damage. i also use the tape on the headliner

as a guide line when the clips come off for gluing.

all the correct edge protection for the sunroof

must be in place to protect the white liner.

finally i have never seen anyone try to install the

long rails and the center panel together, that looks

like a nightmare. get the liner in and set for two days

then glue, then leave it for two days, then install the

inner roof panel then finally the body panel.

it can be done like Mike says clean hands and time.

just like the the nuns used to say to me;

Be patient or become one!!

These guys in Kirkland installed one my E9 sunroof car.  It turned out nearly perfect.

Among the things I won't even consider doing myself, this is high on the list.  By the way, because you need to remove the windshield and rear window to do this properly, it's a good time to check the condition of the gaskets and locking strip...and the glass,,, and???  The classic project creep.

Related question: Those of you that used professional installers, did you or the upholsterer contract the glass removal and installation? 

 

Because I need to know if I have to do a two step process and become the next "Goggles Paisano" driving without a windscreen to the upholsterer....

I towed my car to and from the installer without glass because I removed the windshields myself and the engine isn't in the car. I can't even imagine driving without a windshield. Plus, it's winter in NY.

Afterword, go out and buy a really nice heat gun as a "reward tool" as if you were going to do the job yourself.
