Dust shields when using an e21 hub and caliper

Greetings all did a quick search on the faq and didn’t immediately find the answer I was looking for.

for my front brakes I’ll be using the 1977 e21 calipers and vented rotors on a e21 hub minted to a 2002 strut.

At at least that’s my plan- my question is what dust shield should I use?  I have both e21 and 2002 options.

I'm doing the same thing as you. I have a set of 2002 shields but I think I'd have to modify to fit cause I think you need the E21 shields and they should bolt right up. Don't wanna steel thread but if anybody has a set of E21 front shields I could use a pair.

Do mean when using the 2002 shields or the e21shields?

The E21 dust shield has the protrusion over the E21 hub, 02 shield doesn't have it and more of a flat shape shield. Also 02 shields will go on without removing hubs, E21 shields you have to remove the hub for fitment. The 02 shield doesn't have any protection for the hub, I was thinking of adding a piece of sheet metal to stick out over the E21 hub.

That sounds like what I have on my 76 2002, I just trimmed them slightly with a pair of snips to fit the larger Volvo calipers for my big brake conversion.

Another early/late difference?  I suspect the "E21 shields" are the same as late '02 shields.

Ive been running without the shields after my big brake conversion for 15  years or more BUT will be putting them back on primarily to keep rain and water off the rotors, since when it is wet and rainy ( all the time here around Seattle) there can be a delay in braking while the calipers and pads squeegee off the water, a little disconcerting!

Update:

I decided to use my e21 dust shields in the front.

to do this I simply mounted them to the 2002 strut with a sea clamp.  Flipped it over and drilled some pilot holes through the two little m6 threaded dust shield mounting channels. Removed the sea clamp and widened the holes.

Separately, I had my 1977 e21 calipers machined (see picture) by a local shop so they work on the 2002 strut with the vented rotor. I didn’t have to machine the rotor as some threads suggest is required.

I test fit everything today and it looks good so far.

Next step paint everything  load springs and install!

questions and comments welcome.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
