How many horses did you get out of your modified M10...

On this reliable, performance-oriented street* engine we saw 127 HP at the wheels on 91 octane.

 

     *I’m never-quite sure what a ‘hot-rod’ is...?

 

What we did: Selected a custom camshaft for usage/RPM-range desired, built custom 9.6:1 pistons to match, added light-ish valve springs, a bit of port clean-up on head and manifold, then topped with a Weber 38/38 carb. -KB

Well, yes, one Percheron, one Berkshire, one mixed- breed draught horse with a lot of Belgian, and one Pinto.

 

I never thought the Pinto pulled as well, but for a horse to work cattle, there was no better.

All out, max porting, big cams, big bore, whatever induction, frequent rebuilds, etc. Just wondering what the max(or close to) hp is that a top engine builder can get out of a m10. Clearly estimates or a guess is fine.

Formula one racing version of the M10 (called the M12)  about 1100 hp. There were also some claims of a 1400 hp output, but to measure accurately above 1000 hp at the time was difficult. (see Wiki)

Piquet scored the Brabham team's last three wins over the two seasons, winning the 1984 Canadian and Detroit races, and the 1985 French Grand Prix, though the engine was generally regarded as the most powerful in F1 at the time, producing a maximum output of approximately 1,100 hp (820 kW) in qualifying trim by 1985. While the engine's potential was never in question with Piquet taking nine pole positions in 1984, however the engine's mechanical reliability and durability under full work load suffered severely with regular engine blow ups and turbo failures becoming a common feature. Also, with FISA imposing a maximum fuel limit of 220 litres per race (re-fuelling was allowed in 1982 and 1983), the 4 cylinder BMW suffered from high fuel consumption which often led to drivers running out of fuel.

 I think we all know that famous motor but, that is also turbo charged and barely a m10. You can never compare flow of a 16v head to the flow of a 8v head.

 

 I'm talking about, What is an estimated high HP number for a naturally aspirated m10 motor that racers are currently using in their race cars. 150, 175, 200??
