Dealer prices for our synchros are stupid, even compared to other German Getrag-equipped cars of the era. There have been good after-market Laso synchros available for a while but suddenly not. What's happening? Any news or leads? Need 5-10 rings.

The aftermarket Laso synchros have been gone for a while.  The last ones were bled out of wholesale aftermarket supplier shelves around 1.5-2 years ago.

Sorry I'm not more help, just glad the over-priced ones in the OEM parts system are still around (even if they are yet another victim of BMW's haywire pricing algorithms).  There are a couple guys who have been hanging onto sets for rainy days.

A while back we ran into this with the synchros in the older 60s-70s Maserati V8 ZF boxes. Rings were trading for $200 and people were hoarding them. Then someone who knows what to do had a bunch made and they were $40 each.

Am I correct in seeing that the older part number has brass-only on the friction contact face and the newer number has the silver porous coating? Do they both do the same work?

The early versions of the tranny used Porsche style synchros that looked like plain circular bands with a rough lead colored surface:  https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/synchron-ring-for-1600-2-1600ti-2002-2002ti-with-gtrag-232-4-speed-gearbox-up-to-1971-23-06-00.html

I don't recall seeing any of the later style, toothed Borg/Warner rings that were anything other than brass.

While I don’t have the part number in front of me, “Yes” - Borg/Warner rings which are currently most-available have a friction-coated contact surface, in lieu of concentric rings. (I have dozens of tired units in a bag.) They work, though one could speculate for not as long as the original. -KB
