Kugelfischer Drive Belt Question

Ordered new drive belt for the Kugelfischer.  In fitting it on, find that it has slightly more 'give' (less taut) than the existing belt.  Both are the same length with 150 teeth.  The only differences are that the old one is a yellowed shade and the new is milky white and the old one is marked '190 Synchoflex T 5/750' and the new one is '802 Synchoflex T 5/750'.  Is the new item's 'give' going to be an issue?

As long as it's got the same number of teeth then the timing won't drift..the stretchiness likely impacts the exact pump timing versus revs/load...but I dunno how sensitive a kugel system is to exact timing. Given the simplicity of intial timing, I guess it's not that sensitive...so all is good..!

The belt isn't going to be a tight fit. Over time, the belt will get heat cycled and shrink.  I applaud you for replacing the belt before it broke.  Easier to do the KF belt than a rubber timing belt on a DOHC engine.

As long as your lower pulley is clean and not siezed to the crank.

While you are in there- clean up the pulley and mounting surface. Use a half-round file to clean up any burrs. Add a dab of antisieze.

I encountered the same fit issue with a belt that just seemed too slack. Car ran fine for about 200 miles, and for reasons apart from KFish, I pulled the engine apart. the slack belt, due to centrifugal forces had worn a hole in the plastic cover. I've not been given any type of answer to this on this forum. The belt was loose and there is no adjustment? Shrink to fit . . . please

Sorry but I cannot answer this one. Was the belt in an unsealed box?  Maybe the belt was an old one (sitting on a shelf in a warehouse).  The lower timing cover on the tii makes the pulley centers fixed and unrelated to the head gasket and head thickness. Compare your "new" one to the old one by holding them together like rubber bands.

 

Doubtful, but check to see if your lower timing cover is straight. A bent or cracked cover could affect how the KF pump sits and the belt fit.
