But to be clear, the spare lug nut — never a bad thing to have — holds a metal “hold-down”, designed to grip the standard steel rim. Thus, round taillight cars (1966-73) received a rectangular hold-down, while square taillights (1974-76) received a round hold-down.

 

The photos below show, first, the rectangular round-taillight hold-down — more commonly painted satin black, but yellow cadmium-plated in this example — and, second, the round square-taillight hold-down, virtually always plated.

Maybe it took them a little while to figure out that the scratches from the rectangular hold down were not going to be covered by hub caps on the later steel wheels.  (?)

 

(they had all these little problems worked out by 1976... so they stopped making them (as c.d. once said))

I now disagree with some of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book. 

I've switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results. 

I apologize for spreading misinformation.

I guess they didn’t notice yet, in 1974, that the external center bore opening on the square taillight’s styled steel rims is measurably smaller than the external bore opening on the earlier (wheelcover style) rim. The rectangular hold-downs I’ve seen don’t rest down correctly on the square taillight’s styled steel rims (first photo). The rectangular hold-downs, however, fit perfectly on the round taillight rims (second photo).

 

Conversely, the round “later version” — notice I’m carefully avoiding the “square taillight” nomenclature — fits perfectly into the styled steel rim’s center bore opening (third photo), but is jiggly and loose — can I say that here? — on the earlier rims (fourth photo).

 

One more nice generalization, with an easy-to-remember mnemonic device — round equals square, square equals round — shot to hell by the un-systematic Germans... ?
