I was speaking with a local mechanic a few months ago who has made some Spec E46 race cars and he told me the ABS system is separate from the rest of the electronics and could "easily" be modified to go on a 2002 for a reasonable cost.  Is this true and has anyone seen such a setup?  I could not find anything with a quick search, although I feel a sense of deja vu as if I had previously asked this question.

E46 M3s use a version of the Teves Mk60 system which is a common upgrade for older BMWs as well as a popular standalone setup for race cars using standalone harnesses from motorsports suppliers such as Turner (was) It was also widely used in VW/Audi family applications but with valving and software to accommodate/complement FWD-based cars.

As for "easily" modifying it to go on a 2002... are you sure he understood that you have a BMW 2002 not a 2002 BMW? You'd need to figure out a way to add ABS sensors, tone rings, all the wiring. For the ESP to work you'd need the electromagnetic servo, yaw sensor, steering angle sensor, etc. I'm sure it could be done, nothing is impossible, but it's not going to happen "easily"

Thanks for the info.  He is aware that I own a 2002.  I let him take a few laps on a track day at ORP so he understood what the car is.  Easily is all relative and I am already pretty out of control.....

Yep, there are actually at least 3 different ABS systems used by different E46s-

It's also possible your mechanic is talking about the mk20 in the early cars,

which did NOT directly interact with stability control.

Since there was none.  The mk60 and Bosch 5.1 did.

Since there was some.  The mk60 is pretty good, I've found...

and the mk60 is what's in the Spec46 cars.

So 'easily' would be getting tone rings in there somehow (not trivial) and plumbing,

E30 rear trailing arms would do the back, and get you discs all in one go,

but the front would have to be all custom.

I agree, 'easy' here would... not be bolt in;;;

I forgot the pedal travel sensor too. I'm not sure how the Mk60 is set up, but on E36s (whatever they use) I'm pretty sure it's a hall sender connected to the pedal. Lots to consider.

Is functioning ABS really what the 02 has been missing for all of these years?

It's in the M2, all of it.  It's one of the things I'm thinking about ripping off the car to be honest.  Along with all the damned AC crap and smog crap- just so much crap.  I need to add some light.  :)

And if the ABS is tying in to the stability control it sucks at the track.  I used to have a z4m coupe.  It would think I was trying to kill myself at least once a lap, even with everything as turned off as it could be.  Trying to turn in on hard braking with the DSC trying to keep the car going straight was...  interesting.

Dave.

I have rear trailing arms that use E30 brakes, but all of the talk of hall sensors and tone rings is bringing me back to reality.  Sounds like a little more than I want to bit off at this time.  Thanks

Eric, all you need to learn is how to pump your brake pedal really fast!  That's what we did in the days before ABS (and what 02ers still do)

Huh- I don't mind the abs.  It comes on occasionally.

But it never really pulls the pedal out from under me (mk60 in a 330)

It's the herky- jerky traction control that kills it for me.

It and me get out of sync, and then we both get whiplash.

But yeah, your right foot is plenty good for ABS in a 2002

Ask your local mechanic — who can do it “easily” ? — to convert your ‘02 to ABS, gratis, as a sales sample. OK, if you must, offer him $500, all in. Then he can market the conversion to additional customers, using you as a reference. Simple. Unless, or until, he realizes he’s gotta charge $3,500 to break even doing it.... ?

Regards,

Steve

...but that's really only a little over 3 racing units, so it's not particularly expensive,

compared to an engine, Hewland trans, or Giken diff,

Or a set of vintage flatslides...
