Hello all,

I am building up a 73” 2002. I am down to engines and have 2 choices: currently the car has a new m10 motor (less than 1000miles) that has been set up beautifully to out perform a tii. I also have access to a brand new, fully rebuilt tii motor (w Weber carbs)...0 miles.

I’m not sure which engine I should use. The car is a light restomod- not looking for concours, more so long term reliability and value.

Would love to hear your thoughts?

I’m assuming the 02 motor is stock and has an 8:1:1 compression ratio. If that’s the case I’d take the Tii motor with the Weber.

Well the tii motor should be 9.0-9.5 c/r so IMHO both motors are going to be pretty much the same.

I think you have to describe the two engines in terms of type of head, compression ratio, cam, distributor, carburation etc., then you can compare them, and through some software programs estimate the power.

While a "Tii" motor has a different block as well to accommodate the injection system, a "Tii" engine really is not a Tii engine without the injection system.

Also for example; when I rebuilt my Tii engine, I used an E12 head but with 9.6:1 pistons and an injection pump calibrated to the early specification. So, is it a Tii engine? Yes, but not original specification for either early or late production.

When deciding, consider that a "Tii engine" requires different fuel tank, pump, fuel lines, some extra wiring, filtering, etc - you don't just drop it in. (Also note that a Tii engine is also an M10....) -KB

The difference between (a.) the non-tii M10 block you’re considering and (b.) the tii M10 block you’re considering (which is equipped with Webers, not fuel injection) is that the tii M10 block was factory drilled for an oil return line for the Kugelfischer pump. Since that oil return line is not needed with carbs, I’m confident it has been plugged. In conclusion, and given that the originally-carbed engine now has higher compression, there is no inherent advantage to the “tii M10 block”.

The difference between a non-tii head and a tii head is that a non-tii head has been drilled to accept a mechanical fuel pump. But both carbureted and fuel-injected ‘02 M10’s use the same model heads. So, similarly, there is no inherent advantage to a “tii M10 head”.

In short, I would recommend you leave the term “tii” out of this comparison — as well as your title — and focus on the comparative specs of the two engines, as stated previously. You are simply comparing two built M10 engines.

Regards,

Steve

Thanks everyone for your comments!

Since I have no experience with a Tii motor (yet), is the Fuel injection more prone to issues / maintenance / reliabilty vs the carbs?

No pump as stated previously...but what about the other Tii specific running gear? Throttle body, intake tubes, log, injectors, injector fuel lines, linkages. Without a complete Tii motor, you are just comparing M10's.

Massimo,

You’ve got us all very confused! You originally said the “tii” engine had Weber carbs. “Weber carbs” would replace everything that is “tii” about a tii M10 because carbed and fuel injected ‘02’s use the same blocks and heads.

Are you now asking whether (a.) carbs or (b.) fuel injection is a better route to power?

Regards,

Steve
