I'm considering replacing the 1967 1600 "can with removable filter" (which is cool but small and a PITA) from the car and finding a normal 68-on spin-on filter adapter, just to make life easier. It occurs to me that there may be a larger filter that mates with the 2002 adapter and does the right thing in terms of bypass, etc. We upgraded several filter sizes on my 389 powered race car and strapped a big magnet to the outside of the filter. When you cut the filter open it collects all sorts of grey goo that previously was left in suspension.

Anyone have a filter #?

if you convert the oil filter to

a spin on type. it is possible to

use the spin on filter for a 1987

thru 1991 325i in it's place. i do

this on my cars and for others

who ask for it. the only concern

is the short distance from the oil filter

to the steering box. if you run with

the battery in the trunk then this

change is a good choice.

Just make sure the 325 filter (has to be from an M20 motor, as the M42 318 uses a canister filter) has a pressure relief valve inside, as M10's have very high oil pressure when cold, especially if you're running 20w-50 oil.

Back in the day when M10 filters were few and far between at auto parts stores--and the nearest dealer was 50+ miles away--I found that the filter from a German Opel of similar vintage fit perfectly--threads and size.  So I used 'em--until one cold morning when the M10's oil pressure caused the filter to bulge--but not split, fortunately.

I wrote to the filter mfg, who told me about the internal pressure relief valve in the M10 specific filters that wasn't present in the seemingly identical Opel filters, and not to use the Opel filter in an M10.  I haven't since--but still have one Opel filter gracing my parts shelf...anyone out there have an Opel?

Do you mean 318 because the 325i filter head screws into the block with an o-ring seal and would not fit to the m10 engine.

I have been using an Amsoil EAO-34 (previously version was SDF-34 but had conventional filter paper in it).  The filter media is not the std paper and is backed with a ss screen.  Foreign particle retention is rated at 98.7% @ 20 micron per International Standards Organization (ISO) 4548-12 (this is not a touchy-feely, shake the bottle test but a laboratory industry std test.).

The internal pressure bypass valve opens at 7-9 psi differential pressure.  Overall length is 4.828 inches, od is 2.921 inches and will clear the 02 steering sector with room to fit a filter wrench over the end.  The stud size on the 02 is 3/4"-16 TPI, filter o-ring is 2.734 inches OD x 2.430 inches ID.

I have used this filter since around 1979 on both the M10 and currently the S14.  The can is heavy and will not buckle with a wrench.  I have witnessed burst tests of the can where it held with not distortion of the base to over 250 psig.

Get the data sheet from their web site.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Some Volvos and Nissans use same thread & o-ring dimensions. Old Volvo filter (B20 engine i think) has larger od than M10 filter but has about same height.

I have never had an issue with the filtration area of the stock filter

becoming saturated,, even when a cam ate itself...

The problem with popping seals is usually that the seal's not

fully seated in the groove, the seal is too tall, or the groove too

shallow.

And that your internal bypass is sticking.  As far as I've found,

the filters have backflow valves, but no pressure bypasses

internal to them.
