I am assuming the capacity of the evaporator and blowers are considerably greater than the pee-wee units we stuff into the console. And those rear parcel shelf outlets, a la a 1961 300d Adenauer, will effectively cool the top half of the passenger compartment. I’m not certain I’d want to be a rear seat passenger when those vents are running on high. But no one really sits in my backseats.

 

I think it’s critical that you find room for the largest condenser possible.

I was thinking that about the condenser as well.  I guess the size of that will ultimately be a constraint as to how much heat I can exchange.  I am going to try and get the biggest in the nose that I can, even if that means a little cutting ?.  I might enquire of Old Air what their recommendation might be in terms of sizing - see if there is a minimum size.

 

I did also wonder about getting two shorter ones connected in series across both sides of the grille opening, effectively spanning the whole opening but allowing installation in two halfs.  These would be installed forward from the radiator so that the air flowing through the condenser can then flow around into the radiator and out of the engine bay under the car.  I guess this will be ultimately self defeating as I will not get the full benefit of the available surface area - maybe you fluid dynamics experts out there can guide me.

This is true. Once I have this lined up, I may get this split in half with a lathe.

At a diam less than 3.0 inch, it will split.  Found this when turning the same pulley for a crank tooth wheel.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

The refrigerant you use could also be a factor in the performance of your setup. Are you going with R12? Can you use petrol-based refrigerants in Australia? I am going to try and use a propane based refrigerant in my set up. At least the pressures will be a lot lower than R 134a.

Definitely open to hydrocarbon refrigerants, they are well used here. Hychill is the brand leader I think. I have a feeling that you don’t need a license to handle it either so you can do it yourself. Need to look into that.

I tried the link for the Universal Evaporator, but it is very difficult to see any information.  Can you provide a beteer link or tell me the name, part number and width of the Universal unit.  The only Universal units I could find were too wide, and interfered with the glove compartment.
