Factory installed antenna - exceptions?

But Harada (first three photos, taken April 1977 and August 1983). It served me well from 1976 until the Big Re-Paint, 2015-18. I didn’t know what brand it was until the upper mount cracked, ca. 2012. I found a dusty ol’ NOS version on eBay, which provided the Harada name — although I wonder if there even was a Harada brand name in 1976.

PBR? (No, not Pabst Blue Ribbon ? but Post Big Re-Paint!) Boring Hirschmann, just like 87% of ‘02’s.... ?

Last photo: boring Hirschmann, taken June 2018.

Steve

Wow, Delia!

That’s the one!

I considered myself very lucky when I found a match to my ‘76 antenna in 2012! But if you could simply go on eBay and find another one today, I guess I didn’t need too much luck: they must have made a million of these things...  ?

Best regards,

Steve

I think it was just lucky to find it there.  But, periodically it never hurts to look for things - little things from the past. They are the touchstones of '02 history.

You could could pair this antenna with a vintage AUDIOVOX AM/FM radio and be well within the correct time period for your '76.

The purists would go nuts!

?

My dealer, too new to BMW’s at the time, installed the Harada antenna along with a Becker Europa II. I had specified the latter but, innocently (stupidly?), failed to specify the former. I suspected it was from a Japanese car, but didn’t know for certain until 2012!

Heck, the Europa II was stolen within a year or so, but the Harada endured the test of time. So everything worked out.... ?

Best regards,

Steve

What about a Motorola, installed in a 1969 (in 1969)?

motorola-radio.thumb.jpg.de2b6aef937fbc5103a56bc06e87cfbb.jpg

Motorola seemed to be more common in the early years. My ‘67 1600-2 had a 6-volt Motorola AM radio...until I replaced it with a Lear Jet AM/FM 8-track (run off a 6-volt to 12–volt converter).

No....I’m not kidding.... ?

Best regards,

I was referencing this particular setup.

But those who may have been around when David E. Davis wrote "Open Your Hymnals to 2002" would know how little love he lavished upon the Blaupunkt radios of the day.

It was the Japanese who were far more capable of quality auto audio.

And if I had only chosen the Audiovox option, I’d probably still have the original radio.... ?

Sometimes I forget that you have #2762757.

It does look remarkably similar to #2762756 shown here:

Yes, but 2762757 only presently has Inka showing on the underside and in the trunk.... ‘2757 dreams of the day it will, once again, look as good as ‘2756!

I’m still recovering (financially) from the Big Re-Paint of the ‘76, but I have most of what ‘2757 needs for its repaint.

And I see 2762756 has a sunroof, so the two cars were identically spec’d.

Thanks for posting the photo!

Best regards,

Steve

#2762756 was sold in 2008 to a party in Santa Barbara.

In 2010, while in the care of an LA mechanic, it was stolen off the street and never recovered.

There were other dealer installed antenna options, at least here in Cal.  I have seen many of these, seen here on late 68 build NorCal 1600 and SoCal 2002.  The 67/67 1600s also used the two post fender mounted style often seen on early VW beetles.

Both of my cars came with these type of antennas.  I've been looking for new ones for many years because the chrome on mine are really pitted.  Last week I found a couple of vendors on e-bay that are selling NOS ones of these.  They are Harada PM-13.  I received the ones that I ordered last night and they are an exact match to the 30+ year old ones on my cars.  At $20, they were a steal.  There's a bunch of them still for sale on eBay for anyone looking:

Maybe someone was doing a tii restoration (or two) in 2011. 2762783 was reportedly stolen in Costa Mesa, Apr '11.

Interesting, John! And I thought my dumbbell dealer — just became a BMW dealer in 1975 ? — was the the only one using Harada antennas back in the day. Clearly, a group of BMW dealers, radio installers, or whoever, was installing Harada antennas before 1976!

Thanks for posting.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
