Rear end thunk oddity

Hm, I was just assuming that I needed new bushings in my rear diff mount, when I shift hard or hit the clutch the rear end 'thunks'... however today I ended up being stuck taking two people in the _back seat_, and the car shifted better and pulled better than ever, no thunk! Even shifts were cleaner!

Clues? How do the bushings go in the rear mount, press-fit? It also did it with a mere one person in the back seat (~110lbs?)

Thanks!
