Solex 40PHH ti Rebuild

If you don't find someone here you can try these guys.  I was talking to them some time ago about restoring some 45 webers....so no direct experience but may be worth a phone call/email.

Those guys are Australian by the way. Never used them and technically they specialise in the ADHE Solex and Mikuni as fitted to Japanese cars. Not saying that they would do a bad job but I think their knowledge of the German PHHs is limited. 

 

What about the ebay guy? Alfa1750? He always seems to have nice rebuilt Dellortos in stock. He certainly has PHH parts (including 8.2mm throttle shafts which are oversized to allow replacement without new bushes).

How about a guy who rebuilds Solex PHH’s for Mercedes 190SL’s? Different PHH version, but quite similar. I know. Sounds expensive.... ?

I've done a fair amount of research on this topic.  The only difficult DYI issue with PHHs is rebushing the inner throttle shaft bushings.   Most machine shops and carb rebuilders will not attempt it, even shops that specialize in sidedrafts.  I've found a few options, the most attractive is this guy in Germany:  http://www.bobs-services.de/preisliste-en.html.  His price list shows 1000 euro for a pair of PHH 40s.  There's a guy in Texas that specializes in Mercedes 190SLs, and is set up to machine and rebush PHHs (mostly the 44s, but I talked to him and he will do 40s.  Expensive.  Will Samples, ssimports@sbcglobal.net. I haven't done business with either of these folks.  As mentioned above, Rocky in Italy has a great selection of parts for 40 PHHs, including bushings.  He's Alfa1750 on ebay.  Fast, reasonable shipping.  I've purchased a lot of stuff from him.

Don't laugh, but Renault R8 Gordinis used a pair of 40 PHH carbs--identical to the BMW ones except they say "Made in France" vs Germany.  (A whole lot of carburetor for an 1100cc pushrod engine!) They were (and still are) raced extensively in France, so you might check for a place in France to rebuild or even find new ones...worth a shot.

you could try Terry Tinney (Terry Tinney Performance Motors, Livermore, CA).  Terry is an engine guru (especially BMW's), he re-did some Porsche 912 Solex's I believe, re-bored, new shafts, throttle plates, bushings etc., whole shabang.  Really busy but really good at what he does.....good luck.

Bob's Services in Germany has a good reputation, mostly do the 190sl version, but will do the others as well. There are still quite a few bits on the German eBay for these carbs, like membranes, pumps, butterflies, cross shafts, needle valves and rebuild kits. If you buy used and buy warped housings could be economically unjustified to fix them. I have a ti and scrapped them because I did not want to pay tribute to them. But I understand their quite nice when in good shape. I can donate some horns if your carbs didn't come with them. I might have some bits left from some cannibalized carbs. I sold all but one set which I kept as shelf ware...

Thanks all for the info. I had a set of 40PII /s on my 356 and had them refurbished by a 356 specialist, Pricey but operate 10x better than the Webers that a PO had installed.

Early 65 911 guys are going back to the original Solex set up that the factory recalled ,so there is talent out there to do rebuilds.   It is just finding the right shop.

Hi,

I knew that the Porsche's had Solex's, but aren't they downdrafts so completely different design? I've seen vw's with odd manifolds to facilitate sidedrafts, but dont see the point. For a daily driver the presumption would be that the phh would be smoother as it was set up for the engine so the tribute would need the same 121 head, ti pistons, fuel pump and distributor to recreate the factory stock settings. I drove a stock ti many years ago, it may not have been 100% fit as the carbs were not rebuilt but drove well. Same owner had a tii touring, which was definitely more lively and smoother. My ti has a lot of engine upgrades, so it's not comparable to either one. There are a lot of poorly set up Weber conversions kicking around, but I don't think the Solex is inherently a "better" carb. In the German 2002 scene they are considered finicky and more difficult to rebuild properly - a case for purists doing high end restorations. There are probably 10 good sources for Weber rebuilds and tuning in Germany, but only two or three real specialists for the Solex phh.

Alfa1750 sells lots of parts for these carburetors.  I have several sets of carbs left over from my ti tribute build that I will sell.  The Solex carbs don't have the roar of the Webers- so they are quieter.  I like mine.

 

Some of the aircooled Porsches used two downdraft Solex 40 P11 carbs.  As with the BMW's most were replaced by Weber (or Dellorto).

You will need:

 

  • Coolant diverter
  • Correct Distributor
  • Correct Linkage
  • Air cleaner

You will not be happy with the results. Take it from someone who knows. I'd rather go with Mikunis or Webers if I were to do it. Read up on Alpinas and slide injectors and re evaluate your project this is a waste of money and tii lust.
