Volvo calipers

Volvo Calipers, or something different might very well be in my near future, thanks for posting this.

I've got just about as far as I can with the stock braking system (braided stainless lines, new rotors, EBC Red Stuff pads, and new shoes/drums out back....)  and it's still not great by any stretch. If I stand on the brakes, it's nowhere near locking up anything and definitely wouldn't describe the setup I have now as confidence inspring... I did do some pretty aggressive playing in the mountains last weekend, and while the EBC's didn't fade persay, the power just isn't there.

I want to be able to flirt with the edge of lockup when I need to.

Well maybe I have something different.  My overhang is more than a mm.  If it was that little why the fuss?   I should edit my post.  They will bolt on.  (With the washer to center it) The pads will not wear quite right.  No performance issue?  Come on. The pad is hanging off the caliper.  Which means there is less stopping force because a section of pad is off the rotor.  Will it work. Sure. Will it work better than stock. Sure. But is there a performance hit.  Sure.  There has to be if I have part of my brake pads not contacting the rotor.  That’s why the Ireland Volvo upgrade kit has this mod done to it.  That’s why they offer the service.  If it didn’t matter they wouldn’t do it.

there are so many variables in braking, the tiny overhang just doesn't make any measurable change.  i would bet there are no 2002 owners who would be able to tell the difference in a blind test.  Toby and I both tracked/raced 02's with the much fussed about overhang....it just didn't matter.  i dare say we are amongst the limited number of folks here who really stress 02 brake systems.

slotting or moving the hole will make the pad wear prettier, but it is not required when making this great improvement in the brake system.  if someone wants simple bolt on stuff on a budget, insert washer and enjoy!  if you want the more elegant solution, the IE modded calipers are nice!  or slot them yourself...as long as you are out driving your 02 with a big stupid grin on your face, it is all good.  ?

Overhang is more than 1mm and the pads do wear with a lip.  If you are doing it right, you're repositioning the caliper mounting holes, period.

No it's not a "part number thing".

If the cosmetics bother you,

or you need clearance for wheels

then slotted or filled and redrilled calipers make good sense.

That 3/32nds of missing  swept area on the inside of the rotor

just isn't that much, from a performance standpoint.

The pads wear ok, they didn't bind or taper, and

for 20 years, 2002ers ran them that way.

Moving them IS better- just a bit better, it's just not 165-13 vs 225-40-15 better...

Now, the metallurgical concerns of welding a casting, those I won't go into...

heh,

Me too. When I went to Volvo setup with the street car I did the slotting, just to make it nice and thinking about 13" wheel fitment. I didn't want to weld though if done right it  probably doesn't hurt.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
