recommendations for an engine builder in the Northeast

Mike A

Recommended Posts

Trying to find a reputable shop in the northeast (Mass., CT., NY, NH, Vt., NJ) to rebuild and detail my Tii motor .  Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike A

Metric Mechanic is NOT in the NE, but they have the worlds best engine crate.
You could have them send you a crate, put your engine in it and send it back to you hem for rebuild . My engine is beautiful and runs great.

I know that is a LOT of shipping, but Jim and Teddy build great engines.

I would call Bimmers Only in Bedford Hills NY.

I would also call Gaswerks in Paramus NJ.

While Gaswerks is primarily Porsches, they also do some high end classic and collectible BMW's. I have Porsche experience with them and would recommend them highly. As a matter of fact, I will be talking to them myself about my Tii engine soon. Impressive operation.

Sports Car Restoration, in Plainville, CT, is one of the pre-eminent ‘02 restorers in the U.S., and could do a fabulous job.

But I believe there are lots of great engine builders, some mentioned already, that could also do a fabulous job depending on what your goals are.

If a dead stock rebuild is what you have in mind, an engine builder’s experience with ‘02 or tii engines is much less critical. And far more shops should be well-qualified to handle the rebuild. But if you’re trying to squeeze additional power out of a tii engine, then your rebuilder’s ‘02 and tii experience becomes more critical.

For instance, there is considerable agreement — but not unanimous agreement — that, unless you are materially modifying your car’s Kugelfischer pump, and understand precisely how that must be accomplished, you should probably use a stock camshaft in a tii. If a prospective rebuilder says “We’ll stick a 304 camshaft in this baby and really make it sing!” without acknowledging how the MFI will be modified to accommodate a camshaft change, he is probably not your rebuilder!

Regards,

Steve

Eric Kerman, Long Island NY.

He has been building M10 engines since the sixties.

I thought he retired a number of years ago.  Has a great reputation.

Great response thank you. In My 40 years of experience with the Porsche varieties including mfi I have made the mistakes and learned the lessons. At this point I am leaning toward an original motor from a 2002 specialist.

+ 1 on this.  The only place I know of who had the person with the expertise to do this was Korman in North Carolina.  He had a guy there who could re-time the K-fish injection pump for hotter camshafts--and I'm not sure he's still there as this was some years ago and he was no spring chicken.

But as was pointed out, for a stock rebuild that is for the mechanical part of the engine, almost any good rebuilder can do it.  I gave my carbureted '73 engine to a local shop, Performance Clinic in Beavercreek, along with all the spec pages from the shop manual.  They hadn't done an M10 before--their forte was American V8s--but had no problems at all--after I warned 'em about surfacing the upper timing chain cover along with the head.  That was 60+k miles ago and the engine is doing just fine...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
