Finally became a 2002 owner!

Sahara

Recommended Posts

After years of wanting one and researching them, I had the means and opportunity to purchase a 2002! I never thought I would own what is, let's face it, a beige car, but I actually like the color a lot. It's the original paint, truly original - it's never been repainted as far as anybody can tell. It has Recaro seats, a Getrag 5 speed, Ansa sport exhaust, Weber 32/36 carb with manual choke, and Bilstein/Eibach suspension. It was a California car until last year when the gentleman I bought it from brought it to Minnesota. I picked it up yesterday and drove it home, about 640 miles, stopping only for gas. I got pretty warm (no AC!) but the 2002 at the miles up like they were nothing.

nice find!  congrats and welcome to the madness.

squaretails rule!

so how did you find it?

I found it on Hemmings. I cast a pretty wide net, craigslist etc., but the this one was the best overall. I found some others for similar money that had been restored or repainted and maybe looked a bit better, but the restorations were of dubious quality and the sellers didn't have service records. This one, while a bit worn cosmetically, has a motor that was rebuilt about 40,000 miles ago by a great shop in California and the five speed was a nice bonus. Lot of flat, straight highways out here in Kansas.

Looks pretty nice! Sahara on Beige...extra nice!

5 speed!...and other goodies you won't have to spend $ on...

AND you DROVE it home all that way with no issue!

Just my opinion but I think Sahara on square tails looks particularly awesome!

Nice ride!   Put the last weekend in April on your calendar for the best 02 gtg around just a few hours south of you.   Also, there are a number of 02 nuts in the KC area as well that you can meet

I've actually been to the '02 fest, I went to the 2017 one to do recon and learn more about '02s.

Wow! That looks clean clean clean. Original paint is a huge score in my book (in any color and fwiw I really like Sahara), as I feel it's a very good leading indicator of how well the car was loved/maintained. Add in the extras, which IMHO the perfect ones for a fun, comfortable, yet still original-looking 02, and you've got one of a heck of a "ready to go" ride.

Welcome to the club!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
