Hello all, just dropping in to introduce myself and new project. No stranger to BMWs, and just sold my e39 m5 and I was itching for a project to tinker around with.

Bought this 2002 from friends shop. Has a rebuilt motor with Ireland engineer head  (Was told), running and driving with rebuilt brakes.

Plan is to drive it around for a while and possibly restore later. I just bought the front bumper today!

Welcome!  Looks like a great start.  You will have a lot to tinker around with.  If you're not careful, you will wake up one morning with the subframes and engine spread out in your garage.

As for the head, if you know the name of the guy who had "ordered" the head from IE, I'm sure you could call them to see if it came up in their records.

Welcome from a fellow '69 owner.  If your VIN is before 1664761, you have a "first series" '69 which has a lot of '68 features; if after that number, it has a number of changes, some required by Federal regulations that took effect on 1 Jan 1969, others were changes by the factory.

The only colors on US-model (and sold through Hoffman Motors) were Chaminox, Nevada, Granada, Polaris and Baikal, so yours has been repainted. If you want to know your car's exact build date and original color, send an e-mail to BMW Classic (check archives for address) and they can tell you.

I'm guessing your car was probably Nevada, as it has a tobacco brown interior; IIRC that interior only came with Nevada cars in 1969.

cheers, and again, welcome to the 2002 fraternity/sorority.

PS--pls post VIN!

As Mike mentions, send an email with the VIN to BMW Archives, requesting their data (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com). There is no charge. You generally receive a reply within two business days. Twenty seconds of work and no downside!

Neither front nor rear sidemarkers. All four could have been removed before a repaint to Europeanize the car, or it could be an early 1969 model, as Mike refers to above (manufactured September through December 1968).

Welcome and congrats! The early cars are rare!

Thanks for posting this, Imran,

So, yes, this would be a “first series” 1969 — as Mike mentioned above — manufactured before January 1, 1969 regulations went into effect. My VIN cheat sheet is non-too-helpful here, suggesting only that it may be an October or November 1968 car (albeit certainly a 1969 model).

I’m seeing some white paint (Chamonix?) under the green, but the BMW Archives data will provide the original color definitively.

Regards,

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
