Hard getting into gear

Could be a number of things:

  • loose or broken metalastic mounts on the shifter bracket (the thing that holds the shift lever to the tranny) can cause that.
  • Sticking clutch pedal, low hydraulic fluid in the clutch system or a leaking clutch slave or M/C
  • loose or worn shift linkage (esp the early style with the fork and blade linkage at the base of the shift lever)
  • and as you pointed out, low tranny fluid.

Is it just second gear that's causing problems, or all of 'em?

Yeah it was grinding a bit. Clutch disk was replaced in 2010. It engages only on the last third if pedal travel, i.e. first two thirds of pedal press is just loose nothing. Not sure if it's always been like that (since I owned it).

Re bleed your slave and should be good and check your fluid level

So to bleed take clear line hook it up to the slave on the trans and put it in the brake master cylinder Res and crack the bleeder screw and start pumping hopefully u see air and keep doing that till u don’t see any air in the line only fluid that’s how I do it by my self

Check fluid level in transmission. 

 

Is there fluid in the brake reservoir?

 

Bleed the clutch slave and see if that helps (super easy)

 

Check for brake brake fluid in the pedal box (under the carpet, down beneath the pedals). Brake fluid in that area is a sign of a leaking clutch master cylinder.

Is it cold where you are? Do you know what gear oil is in the tranny? If someone putty a thicker viscosity oil in there before you got it (to remedy some other issue) it may be hard to engage in a gear when it's cold but once it warms up its fine. I had to do this to a Nissan pickup years ago and if it was cold out it would be a little harder to get in gear for the first few minutes of driving after the oil got to temp it was fine. I can't remember why I had to do this but I do remember it helped what ever problem it was.

Probably more likely a good clutch bleeding would help though.

I used to have a bipolar shifter.  One day it was fine and on other days it would be reluctant.  There came a day when I could not tell if I was in first or third so I decided to fix it.  I had known that the mounting blocks between the shift platform and gearbox were very worn but was putting it off.  Replacing them was a pain but it transformed the shifting.  No more bipolar behavior.

     DISCLAIMER -- I now disagree with much of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book as timing maps for our engines.  I've also switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results.  I apologize for spreading misinformation.

Clear line from the hardware store, with an ID that matches the bleeder stems.  It will get stiffer and yellower as it gets older/used.

 

I like to poke two holes in the lid of a clear plastic Poulsbo Picked Herring jar, one for the tubing and another for a hanger wire.  Make two and you have one for each side when you bleed the brakes.

I'd suggest pressurizing the master to push air out faster (also eliminates the need of a helper)
