Trying to understand the EB32G + History

All, I started off trying to understand why the E20 turbo is part no EB32G despite many of the other KKK turbos having Kxx designations.

 

The history seems to go something like this:

In ~1946 a small team at BMW together with a company WMF at Geislingen [WMF today best known for kitchenware] developed turbochargers for aircraft engines. In 1948 the rights and engineering team were taken-over by J Eberspaecher, a well known exhaust system company. There was some joint development with Robert Bosch GmbH from 1961 and the first production turbo designated the 'EB 0' shipped in 1963 [I guess for diesel engine application, but not sure]. Facing cashflow challenges in its exhaust business, Eberspaecher  sold the turbo business to KKK in 1972.

So, EB32 was a designation from the Eberspaecher days and KKK continued with it when they took-over [my conclusion].

I tried to find other applications of EB-series turbos and the only one I found so far is the EB33G which was used in a Volvo Penta 70B diesel engine for marine applications from 1973 to 2009.

 

The other thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a connection between the Ausfuhrung numbers and the Kxx designations.

EB32G = 5637-970-1700

EB33G = 5637-970-3300

KKK K24 = 5324-711-0009 (iveco example)

KKK K26 = 5326-970-7007 (porsche example)

KKK K27 = 5327-970-6502 (MB example)

so, its clear that Kxx=53xx

this xx seems to be decimal inches of the compressor exducer, large diameter of the compressor wheel : K27 means 2.7inch

also for the Kxx series the first 2 digits of the last quad is the percentage ratio of the inducer, small diameter of the compressor wheel, ( 5327-970-6502 means 65%) see http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=15595

 

I dunno if that works with our EB32G as that would mean 3.7 inch outer dia (94mm) with 17% inner diameter (16mm) for the compressor wheel.

 

So, maybe EB32G = 5637-970-1700 is some relative of the KKK K37?. The K37 is a a diesel engine turbo from as early as 1977 http://www.turbo-product.com/KKK/K37.ASP

Could service kits for a K37 fit our EB32G?

 

anybody know more on this topic??

FYI there was an EB32K  (5636-970-1400) fitted in  1974 to Mercedes OM403 diesel truck engines, and a EB43K (5646-970-3700) used on the Merc OM355A    


Volvo diesel engine THD100D used the EB43G  (5647-970-3701) plus the  EB33 (5636-970-4200) Fitted to Porsche 935

 

We mentioned earlier the Volvo Penta 70B uses EB33K:  the ausfuhrung is 5636-970-3100

 

Maybe one of these applications could offer a spare parts source

the EB32G was also fitted to the Iveco-Pegaso   engine 9135.01 and engine 9135.3 (5637-970-1201)

What is it that you are trying to cross reference?

 

Seal and bearing kit? Two years ago, maybe three, my rebuilder said that the "kits" were not available, but the individual parts were. I called it an EB32G, he called it a K27. The significant things are the bearings (aluminum) and "piston ring" seals. IIRC the exhaust housing is a T04 shape.

 

A replacement turbo unit?

 

The lore is that the unit was "used in a truck"; I have somewhere the A/R figures (it can be calculated, but I am lazy), but you seem to have done a lot of the work. One thought would be to look at the engines that your selection are fitted to and look at the displacement etc. to see if there is compatibility.

 

If you are looking for a whole unit, I wouldn't wait for BMW nor pay what the "Ask" is.

 

At the very least, i am confident that the exhaust housings can be reproduced.

I am looking for information, exploded diagrams, parts list, maintenance instructions etc. Anything that can help save the turbo. So far I have found enormous shaft play and damage to the inducer turbine (or maybe its balancing trimming of a blade...I will post photo later)

Is your exhaust housing cracked between the two scrolls?

 

This image was from someone here on the FAQ.

 

I have spent many hours researching and have never found specifications or much of anything you seek. But once the calculations are done, then you can make some headway on replacement inducers,

 

As far as bushings and seals, I am sure they can be had, I just didn't pursue it because of lack of interest. I used my "rebuild kit" that I bought some 30 years ago when I had my turbo done by the local shop.

 

It seems that many who say they want kits or an exhaust housing really don't want to pay for a small run of parts.

 

I'll keep going on this, but slowly as it is WAY down on the rebuild list, and only to have a good 2nd and 3rd spare.
