PVGP Thank You!

To all of you that were able to attend the 2018 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix / Oktoberfest in Pittsburgh:

A huge thank you! You made this event amazing! It was a BLAST and (as always) a truly re-energizing experience, as is The Vintage in Asheville!

To all of you I missed and didn't get to hug and meet… next time! See you in North Carolina in May!

And to Peter Stillwell…. I will never hug your sweaty, hairy, bare chest again. I love you man….but even **I** have my limits!

I'm getting flown out to Monterey next month courtesy of the Sam Smith / Mark Francis / Carl Nelson / Thongsai goon squad… hope to see some of you there!

This year at the PVGP was absolutely incredible. So many good friends with their BMWs, so glad to see you all even if it was just for a minute or two.

See you in Monterey, Paul!

I heard several numbers from 175 to 125. Larry Schwarz & Robert Cruz did a count yet never heard the results. Missed the '02 Parade Lap World Record by 28 '02s.

Paul, it did my soul good to see you up, about and looking good.  I, along with your legion of friends had been terribly worried about you.  Seeing you there made my day!

As for attendence:  per the folks at National, 162 2002s were registered for both Ofest and the PVGP (no overlaps on the figures).  I heard about 135 on Saturday at the CCA hillside, plus another 27 (I counted) on the track.  Amazingly, I think I had the only Nevada car there...

PS--+1 with Jim Denker said above--also have a Sahara '73 and live in the Dayton area...

Jeez Paul-I think my feelings are hurt.?

I can't help it if I get all hot and bothered after racing  in a Nomex suit. Plus the brake fluid boiled in the 911 and I lost brakes going in to the serpentine corners which made it a little more stressful. I was not only so very happy to see you in good health and spirits, the hug was partly a celebration of my own continued existence. I think you're a great hugger !

As they say " Man plans and God laughs" after racing the Alpina replica at the Giants  Despair Hillclimb-and suffering my own despair as I realized the suspension was not straight enough for the PVGP, I realized how lucky I was to have an alternate car to drive. Shame I didn't put brake scoops and heavier duty brake pads in it. It was a great event and wonderful to see you in so many fantastic cool funny and good friends. Sorry I couldn't get the 2002 ready for the PVGP, I tried.

Very best regards to you and Wendy as always, cheers , here's to you Buddy!

Oh Peter! Our paths will cross again, and you'll get another hug from me. I promise. You're too smart and weird and sincere and interesting not to appreciate fully.

And Mike (and anyone else worried about me) - I'm doing really well. I have 3-4 days of crappy post-chemo effects every two weeks, but life is absolutely GRAND and I'm loving all of it. I've got 3 more months to go, and I'm constantly reminded of how damn lucky I am.

Cheers to you all! - And Andrew…. I'm flying in to SFO. Maybe you'll "accidentally" show up in Monterey!

Sorry I wasn't able to visit with the 2002 crew during Oktoberfest - I was so busy with PVGP (and trying to get the car to run properly) that I missed most of the Oktoberfest events. Attaching an in-car shot from the pace lap at the beginning of the 2002 race on Saturday afternoon. Inka, number 42.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
