You can use this product to remove rust. I have good experience with it.

Here you go.  Number 7 in the diagram.  I wonder if making them out of stainless steel would be advantageous.

I thought the thickness would have started a lot smaller. Like 0.02-0.05mm

I'll have a look tomorrow at work where we order our shims and if they also have big sheets instead of small rolls we currently use.

The advantage of stainless is that it would eliminate the most common failure point of these shims, oxidation.  Since the shims also act as "gaskets" to keep the lube in, rusted shims become unusable at some point.

Ok so I was searching for this thread.  I just put in my steering box,  it feels really good, firm but not stiff. I adjusted it so there is 1-2 degrees of play in the steering wheel.  I had the car up on my quick jacks and had one hand on the front wheel, the other on the steering wheel, and kept putting 1/4 turns in it until the play was gone,  then locked it in. 

 

Does anybody have one of these rebuilt steering boxes... if so how is yours feeling?  any complaints or observations?
