Engine mount: round v. square, 1600

Hi all - I'm pulling the engine to clean and fix up the engine bay and I want to replace the mounts. My '68 1600 has a round left side mount. I've read to the forum  that square mounts are from later cars. Any preferences or recommendations between the two? Could I fit a square on the left side?

The rectangular one has capture capability in case the rubber shears so the engine doesn't roll over.  The round one had only a thin sheet metal can that isn't very robust.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

The round mount was what was originally installed; the rectangular one is the factory replacement for the reasons noted.  Same with the right side mounting bracket. 

 

If your 1600 still has the folded over (not welded-up) mount bracket, strongly suggest you replace it with the later style bracket--the style that's welded up from several pieces.  The early ones fatigue crack and will eventually fail, causing the engine to sag to the right.  Ask me how I learned this!
