I raced a 4 speed for years.  Lighter, less friction, and I had it.

Just needed the appropriate diff for whichever track I was at,

and whatever size wheels I was playing with at the time.

The five speed has the same 2-3 gap that the 4 does, so there's

no advantage there...

The only thing I've noticed recently is that good 4- speeds are getting hard to find, too.

Picked up the instrument cluster after getting the speedo and tach repaired. Nice older gentlemen that did the work from his home these days. Couldn't resist snapping a picture of his hord of old clusters while I was there.

Installed. Exiting to see that tach.

Well, things got real interesting this weekend. I have a friend that told me he has a crazy, hoarder uncle who lives in the desert and that back in the day he drove old BMWs and still has a bunch of parts. My daughter had some basketball games to play in the desert this weekend so between games I paid a visit to the uncle. He was a nice old guy that seemed to enjoy the fact I came out to talk cars. He's moving out of state so he had already cleared out most of his parts but he told me he had kept a 320i 3:91 lsd. When he showed it to me it didn't have any visible markings that would indicate it was an lsd but both flanges turned at the same time so I was intrigued. When I asked him how much he wanted for it he said I could have it. I told him I would give him some money but he refused and said he was happy it was going to a good home.

Well when I got home I opened it up and this is what I found.

I could tell it wasn't an original lsd but other than that I didn't know what I was looking at. I spoke with Andrew at Ireland Engineering today and showed him this picture and he said it was a converted lsd. He said maybe some kind of Ebay kit but he wasn't familiar with it. Can anybody tell me more about this. I have no idea what the lockup is but it's got to be better than the open diff presently in my car. Right??????

Thanks. This is really helpful.

Since it was free and I have the driveshaft off already I'm going to use it. An LSD wasn't in the budget for this summer so hopefully this one will last until the budget changes.

That would be my approach too. It cost you nothing so is worth running until it breaks. It might surprise us all so be sure to report back. You can always go back to your current diff

The 4 speed I bought still had the speedo cable in it when it arrived. When I tried to take it out I understood why it was still in there when shipped. That sucker was stuck. I could take the bushing out of the tranny but that cable wasn't coming out of the bushing.

So I went over to 2002 AD this morning and picked up another bushing and put a new O-ring in it. Should be ready to go back in the transmission.

I said in an earlier post that I was thinking about swapping the entire exhaust. Well, I decided to pull the trigger. Here's the Ireland Engineering SS step header. 20180618_132200.thumb.jpg.b466f1103bc392dc3723a66751b17b0a.jpg

Here's the rest of the SS exhaust still wrapped in the box.

I wish I could dedicate more time to getting this all done but I'm remodeling the front bathroom and preparing to restain the back decking. The wife has rightly had enough of me working on the car and has "urged" me to refocus some attention on the house. She's probably more patient with me than I deserve so it's hard to argue with her. I'll try to get some work done on the car after taking care of my familial duties. I wouldn't want to go to all this trouble just to loose the car in the divorce.

Let's begin with a question. My automatic had a reverse light switch with 4 terminals and 4 wires that connected to it. I haven't seen one like this.

I bought a new 2 terminal reverse light switch for my 4 speed but I'm not sure how to wire it. Anyone familiar with this 4 wire setup?

I pulled the exhaust manifold off to get ready for the new headers.

I also took off my differential in preparation for my fake LSD. The thing is really crusty. I mean....damn!

I pulled the output flanges off the 320i differential and brought them to Ireland Engineering to have them re-drilled to fit an 02. They didn't have any in stock to exchange so I'm going to have to wait a week or so until they're done which is no big deal.

I also pulled out the Dremel and cut off the nubs and the baseplate for the aluminum accelerator pedal. I'll try to install that tomorrow.

I got the aluminum accelorator located and drilled. It took a lot of playing around to get things situated the way I like it. (Playing around included doing some banging with a heavy hammer). It's a little tough to be positive at this point because sitting in my garage pretending to drive is not the same as being out on the road actually driving but, for heal-toe it seems solid. The spacing feels just right to operate both pedals with the ball of my foot. However, I'm a little worried that actual driving might reveal the gas and brake are a bit too close. Time will tell but a little leftward bend to that brake pedal might be needed. (Sorry for the picture with the carpet scraps. I was curious how it would look with the carpet and didn't take any other pictures).

With the gas pedal location dealt with I hooked up the throttle linkage. Looking at this picture reminded me I still need to remove those cooler lines. I detached them from the radiator days ago but was letting the last bit of ATF drip out before doing so.

Getting close to putting the transmission in. It hit me today that before doing so I should check to make sure the fill and drain plugs break loose. They do. One less thing to worry about.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, mating the 4 speed tranny with the engine in the car was as bad as people say. The only thing that made it slightly less terrible was the fact that I knew it was going to take a while before I would get my differential output flanges back from getting re-drilled. Knowing this made it that much easier to take my time and walk away before I got to the point of throwing a 3 pound hammer through my front windshield.

The fact I was doing the installation by myself certainly didn't help. I can't tell you how many times I was under and then back out above linning things up. Another set of eyes and hands would have helped immensely. But after plenty of starts and stops, I finally have the transmission in.

Yep...did the same. Not an easy task, and since I found I had a bad tranny I have done it 3 times now in 2 times out. Glad to see you got it!! One thing I did not realize when I did mine is I had to slide center (pumpkin) of rear end back as 4 speed with factory 4 speed driveline was way too tight.. mount for rear end is adjustable and had to be slid back a bit.

Is there a way to get the mount to align a little better?  It looks stressed, as it sits.

I now disagree with some of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book.

I've switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results.

I apologize for spreading misinformation.

Is that the auto cross member?

it looks curved in the picture if so you'll need to get a stick cross member that goes straight across

Auto cross member is flat across the top but has shape if looked at from above or below...works fine, unless his is bent I believe the angle of the photo is producing a bent look.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
