Our group of 2002 racers continues to grow; we’ve got 6 cars here this weekend (a father/son stopped by, they’re interested in a doing a race in the forthcoming rental race car and/or building them a new one from scratch). Hospitality tent courtesy of one of the car owners. -KB

Ken, I was up there yesterday, stopped by my fabricator's shop over in the shop area (Roger Hamlin), he has a pretty incredible CSL clone car in there now and an Alfa Romeo T33 TT12 which is amazing.

I wandered by your grouping on my way out, nice to see a wide array of 02's there and there was a golf colored o2 across from you someone was working on.  Steve had his Koepchen o2 car there as well....more o2's at that event than I have ever seen and I have been going for like 15 years.  You guys definitely had a great spot there.  What a day as well, perfect Nor Cal day....probably going to be on the toasty side today though.  Good luck

Very cool Ken.  “Sears Point” was my home track growing up.  My brother ran a 510 and a 200sx in B Sedan, GT3 and GTU.  Memories.

Ahk - next time, ask for me.

We did a quick head gasket change to the golf(-ish) #88 car we call the old mare* and had it back on the track (*with a half-rebuilt engine that’s going on 6 years). If you watched Saturday’s race, you saw 3 of our downdraft BMW 2002’s trading places with the Koepchen sidedraft car. We’re hoping to have even more 2002’s to bring with us next year. -KB

I will.  It was a quick trip, I was visiting with Roger Kraus over at the 'tire center' and saw the o2's lined up.  You guys had a primo location I will say.  Really nice.

It is nice that you get to run in a relative like/like group - that is cars that are 'relatively' similar in power and speed.  Because my car is a euro bastard and has significantly more power than the typical bmw 2002 run group, SVRA says Grp 12 for me, which is BMW CSL's, Porsche 935's, RSR's + other higher hp rigs all of which have +100 hp more than me.  Its a fast group for sure, not sure really that it sounds like that much fun really....so really kind of a dilemma that I had not really thought that much about before.  Back in the day that would have been 'Division 1' in Gruppe 2 - CSL's and RSR's duking it out, Gruppe 2 Division 2 would have been o2's and Ford Escorts - BMW vs Ford + an Alfa or two mixed in there.  Of course there just aren't that many of those cars now so it is what it is.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
