Hey everyone,

Calling all VIN experts! Or anyone that has studied the 02 history enough to know how early my 02 is. Check out the response I received below:

The BMW 2002 US VIN 1661038 was manufactured on May 07th, 1968 and delivered on May 14th, 1968 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Polaris metallic, paint code 060.

When did BMW start producing these awesome cars? Is my car a pretty early production 02?

Thanks for the help!

VIN 1660001 was the first U.S. 2002, so yours was the 1,038th produced. A few of the very early VIN’s might have been produced in late 1967, as pre-production and/or press release vehicles, but January 1968 appears to signal the beginning of regular production.

My records show, as an example, that VIN 1660016 was manufactured on January 15th, 1968.

Recall that shipping these cars from Germany to U.S. dealerships required substantial time, anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks, depending on ship schedules, weather, U.S. Port of Entry (P.O.E.), especially whether that P.O.E. was East or West Coast, Panama Canal schedules, distance from P.O.E. to dealership. (That “delivery” to Hoffman Motors did not represent a physical delivery of the car but, rather, the legal shift of ownership, risk, and reward from BMW AG to Hoffman Motors, an NYC-domiciled corporation.)

Accordingly, it sounds as if 2002’s were hitting the U.S. market around March or April 1968, those examples, of course, probably having been manufactured in January and February. Assume your car arrived at its U.S. dealership 6 to 12 weeks after that May 7th manufacturing date.

Any 1968 2002 is an early car, and deserves to be treated as such. Below, April and May 1968 English-language brochures.

Regards,

Steve
