Description:

Hi Folks,

Hoping I may be able to draw on your collective experience for some quick advice. I just picked up a restoration project (73 ‘02) and am in the process of getting to know the aftermarket for these cars. The dash on the car is shot and I have someone who is offering me a mint dash for $900 CAD. Can anyone confirm if that is a fair price for a full dash? I’m feeling like it is as they don’t seem to pop up all that often but it’ll make me feel better to have some third party confirmation on the value.

Any help is hugely appreciated.

It depends on what your willing to pay. I’ve seen dashes that were rewrapped in leather that cost over 1k usd. Others have just put a dash cover or a dash cap and be done with it and spent the money on other parts. If you want a crack free original dash expect to pay top dollar. You can always try to negotiate the price but at the same time, crack free original dashes are very hard to come by. If you’re restoring your 02 to be a show car then go for it.

Thank you all so much. Valuable advice. At least I know I’m in the realm of reason which was my main goal. Still have to think on it a little but I’m leaning toward grabbing it.

Cheers.

A 1973 model originally had a two-piece dash.  1974 and later models originally had one-piece dashes.  Although CAD900 is a very good price for any mint dash, it’s a screaming good deal for a mint two-piece dash, as they are considerably rarer than mint one-piece dashes (the one-piece dashes were manufactured and sold by BMW as replacement dashes until, say, 10 years or so ago).

A “mint” dash has no cracks whatsoever.

Regards,

Steve

Can someone point me to a picture or thread which shows the difference between the 1 and 2 piece dashes?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
