1600ti brake booster question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

There is a long thread on housings in the German club site as so many models had these. see https://forum.bmw-02-club.de/board_entry.php?id=116310&page=183&order=time&category=all

The brake booster is a "bkv" in German, not much there on them but I suspect the ATE part on the 2002ti is not unique to bmw. Unfortunately the ATE site (now Continental) is completely useless, they don't distinguish between the 1600ti and 2002ti so you may need to search some more. The type used in the 2002ti is documented but I could not easily find the 1600ti equivalent.

Regards,

Andrew

Andrew,

Thank you for the response and link.  I hadn't found that particular page before and it is extremely useful.

I started this query because I  ended up with a '71 1600 last year and it is a favorite amoung our 2002s.  The PO had done some major body work with skirts, air dam, etc. all out of metal.  He unfortunately passed away before finishing the project so my family and I are in the midst of doing that now.

I decided that since this car could never be a sleeper due to the aggressive body stance I might as well amp up the power, suspension, and brakes to honor the first BMW screamer, the 1600ti.  So I have been researching everything "ti".

The booster is particularly intriguing as the Parts Manual shows that the 1600ti shared the same booster with the early 2002s even those sent to the states.  Since it also shared the air box with the 2002ti I couldn't figure how that would fit under the hood.  Some experimentation with standard and ti/tii boosters confirmed my suspicion that it couldn't be done.  So I was trying to find someone with a known original booster/air box configuration to see what components were used.

I know there were some models that used the air box with slanted pipes but no indentation underneath to accommodate the ti/tii booster.  I've attached some photos of one I have.  I do not know what model this came from.

Thanks again for your help.  If you weren't on another continent I would love to meet you at this week's Mid-America '02 Fest in Eureka Springs Arkansas!  We'll be driving the 1600(ti).

Hal

Hi,

Yes, its too bad that I am so far away as you guys are so active which I cannot say about the German 02 Club. Have you looked in the bmw classic online catalog for a 1967 1600ti? It should list the part number for the booster even if its NLA, then look at a 1971 2002ti or even a US Market tii and see if its the same part number. I would not be surprised if it wasn't the same or at leas a successor model. I remember seeing in Taylor's book some odd boosters, but I think they were for RHD cars and were remote boosters.

Looks good, an attractive color for a well modified car!

Did you try contacting the guy in Alberta that found a 1600ti last year?  He says his engine bay looks original, so if he's still around, he should be able to help you out.  He started a thread in this forum last year, ClassDavid...

good luck

I found another thread in the German forum on this topic, there it clearly states that the early 1600ti from 1967 had a single circuit brake system and that the booster looks like a cookie jar and significantly different from the later 2002ti version. The 1600-2 could be ordered with the booster as an option, even in the single circuit version. Apparently at some point the 1600ti also went to a two-circuit system, you cannot tell from the ETK though when that happened.

The single circuit version appears in page 340801 Bremskraftverstärker Unterdruck

The dual circuit version appears in page 340812 Bremskraftverstärker Unterdruck

The air filter is not shown separately, you get only the 2002ti version with the deviating left end cap for the tii which I don't think appeared on any carburated variants see 130690 Ansauggeräuschdämpfer/Filtereinsatz

I assume you will find the pages also in the English catalog.

see here, if your German is good...https://forum.bmw-02-club.de/board_entry.php?id=134290&page=4&category=10&order=time&descasc=ASC

I have been looking in to this as well and my understanding is that there are three things that help identify the 1600ti air canister (over the 2002tii canisters):

1. There is no indent for the booster in the 1600ti like the 2002ti and 2002tii had. The booster was smaller and didn’t require the extra space.

2. The clasps that hold the end caps on are reversed (i.e., they are mounted to the main body instead of the end caps). This was also the case for the 2002ti.

3. There are 4 slanted/angled output holes to sync up with the carb inlets (as opposed to a single hole that fed to the manifold of the injected cars). Again, same as the 2002ti.

halboyles - the picture you posted appears to be a 1600ti air canister given the lack of indent.

Attached are two pictures of a 1600ti (top) and a 2002ti (bottom) canister for comparison. I also have several pictures of a 1600ti booster (see next post).

Here are some pics of a 1600ti booster... the first few pictures were taken after the booster came back from being serviced (the exterior has yet to be painted back to its factory black and bright royal blue).

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
