Value of an abused TII?

....That makes it a May 1972 build.

Agreed.  BMW Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) will provide the specific manufacturing date and verification of the original color (in all likelihood, Polaris, paint code 060) if you email them the VIN and request their data.  There is no charge.  Turnaround is often one or two business days.

There is little other information inherent in the 7-digit VIN.  276xxxx cars are U.S.-spec tii’s of the 1972 and 1973 model years.  VIN 2761546 is the 1,546th U.S.-spec tii manufactured.

This VIN, because it is before VIN 2761944, indicates the car was manufactured with a type-121 head, plastic intake runners, and no firewall notch.  These are generally considered the most collectible tii’s, although experience and history revealed that the plastic runners were subsequently superseded by aluminum runners because the plastic runners were prone to failure.  1972 model tii’s, in general (meaning with plastic or aluminum intake runners), are also prized because they have chrome bumpers tucked close to the body and chrome front seat recliners.

This is a very collectible example!

Regards,

Steve

Most common structural rust?

1. Rear wheel housings (visible from inside trunk, inside wheel wells, and from inside passenger compartment, with rear seat removed)

2. Floor pan that supports the rear subframe (visible from inside the passenger compartment, with rear seat removed)

3. Rocker panels

4. Front frame rails (technically not frame rails because they are part of the monocoque body, but they support the front subframe)

5. Bases of A pillars — this car might be suffering in this area

Front fenders, spare tire wells, and much of the floor, especially near the pedal box, are all very prone to rust, but rust in these areas is often less of a threat to the car’s structural integrity than the first five “structural” items.

Rear quarter panels are a mixed bag.  Rust here is sometimes relatively restricted; at other times, it extends into the trunk floor, into the rockers, into the rear wheel housings, and around the windows. That right rear corner looks pretty nasty.

Keep us posted.

Regards,

Steve

Any update?
Not yet. Left voicemail, text message and note on the door. Looked for info on the dealership online. Someone said the dealership was shutdown. Will be looking into that.

Finally saw someone working while passing by the dealership. Asked the man about the car. Strange answer. Said it was sold 3 years ago. Apparently the owner hasn't picked it up yet. Was also told the cars only redeeming quality it that it's a TII.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
