Front and Rear Suspension Rebuild

2002#3

Recommended Posts

On September of last year I asked for your
advice re: rebuild of my '74 tii F and R suspension.  Thank you for the fine collection of expert and superb suggestions, ideas, and mechanical hints.  Last month, I began.

Progress:

1.  F and R suspensions are out.

2.  Upgrading to H&R sport springs, ST sway bars, Bilstein HDs, and 250mm rear drums.

3.  Trans and clutch come out next week.

4.  Mission creep has resulted in the following more prominent projects:  new hard and flex brake lines, new hard fuel lines, new clutch assembly, replacement of worn transmission and differential seals/O-rings, refurbish steering box, and replacement of all wheel bearings and seals.

5.  All new bushing are original rubber.

6.  Photos:  method of engine support, old suspensions (with powder-coated SF and TA, new parts (more on order), a real man's tool store in Spartanburg, SC (sort of a low budget HF).

Nice.. at first I thought this cart was at Home Depot in the BMW 2002 suspension aisle.. wouldn't that be nice. Bring in your "core" and come out with a new one!

Nahhhh.... the fun is in the breakdown, refurb and eventual beautiful final product to be proud of.

Enjoy and keep the pix coming.

Randy,

The cart was used by CBS Sports during NFL games.  Some guy in town had 25 of the them for sale.  $20 each.  Pneumatic tires!

You're right.  I had no idea at all how much fun it would be - even involving the supreme PITA multiple hours of removing 43-yo bushings and bolts/nuts.  The transmission and clutch should be a real treat...

Andrew,

Sweet.  You probably smiled, too, when you received your H&Rs.

We should start a 74 Tii club!

I just did both subframes and suspensions. Also went with ST, Biltseins and H&R Sports. New cunifer brake lines were hand formed using Fed Hill lines and their flaring tool. Give them a ring..they're very helpful. Order a few more feet to practice getting the flare correct. Keep the old lines and use them as templates.  After a while I got good at it! Also used the stainless braided lines front and rear. Here's a hint. Make and install the new, rear subframe to underbody connection hard lines to the subframe before reinstalling the subframe. Then hook up the hard lines to the underbody junction after it's up... Just easier.

Also, remove the E brake cable retainer screw or clamp from the underside of the subframe while it's out. I didn't see a new differential crossmember in your pile either...might as well.

Good luck. Satisfying job.

Thank, guys.

Started reassembly this week.  Finishing and alignment in time for MidAmerica 2018 is going to be a challenge.

Newly powdercoated front subframe was not completed in time to be in the first photo.

Why?

IEs are linear rate and H&Rs are progressive rate. So the IEs have to be reseated after the car has been off the ground, it's a pain in the butt.

Come on, one doesn't have anything to do with the other.  If the spring is long enough to maintain preload in full droop, it tends to stay in place.  If the spring isn't long enough to maintain preload in full droop you need to be careful and reset it. (Has to do with spring rate and overall length. Nothing to do with linear vs. progressive springs.)

OP, it all looks great.

Dave.

'76, totally stock. Completely.

That said, my H&Rs are not long enough to stay in compression when the wheels are hanging...

yet, I have never had any problem with them finding their places when it is put back on the ground.

Some people do wire them in place though.

edit:

I have not owned/used IE springs, but could definitely see where a difference in the way the coils 'start and stop' at the ends could/would affect the way the springs behave once things are dangling up in the air... and then let back down.  There is more to it than just the overall length.

     DISCLAIMER

I now disagree with some of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book.

I've switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results.

I apologize for spreading misinformation.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
