Rear Disc Brake Conversion

Thinking of converting my rear drum brakes with this rear disc brake kit from Bluntech. ( VW rotors and calipers.)

Looks like a great kit . Has anyone done the conversion with this kit and any reviews or comments?

Yes.  It is often brought up in comparison to the 250mm E21 drum upgrade.

I highly recommend this set up and it is what I ran years back on my S14 swapped 2002. It was relatively cheap compared to the other rear disc set ups, and the braking was quite nice and balanced. I did have this paired to the Ireland/ 2002garagewerks front BBK for 15"+ wheels. I think I remember paying much less than the 250mm drum upgrade quote also (although I sourced some parts myself at the junkyard like calipers and carriers).

 

Emergency brake function is retained also.

 

You will have to turn your hubs down to have the VW disc clear. Your local machine shop will do this for ~$50, that is what I paid. I didn't worry about drilling and tapping a hole in the hub to secure the disc with a hex bolt. I ran lug studs so the disc wouldn't;t fall off anyway during wheel removal.

 

Pictured here is the brake set-up behind a 16" x 8" Alpina (they look tiny here). The only consideration is that 14"+ wheels are generally recommended to clear.

Can you tell me more about your wheel tire setup?  Any rubbing on the front while turning? Do you know the over all tire diameter(rollout)?  Thanks!!

I have the same set up...... I think. The only downside is the bleeder is not on the top. I ended up using a braided brake hose that allows the caliper to swing up (after unbolting) to bleed it. 

And as this pic shows. Some 13 inch wheels fit!

I must say that the Ireland kit is another nice, package option.  You could certainly save a couple hundred by hunting down the parts in a breaker yard, but how much is your time worth, and do you want used, or brand new parts?

 

Braided flex lines .... oooooohhhh....... ahhhhhhh.........

We were going to try until the pair of calipers we had were not deemed rebuildable. What rotor does it use?

Now that you offer both options, I don’t believe I’ve seen a complete list of pros/cons of the VW brakes vs the IE Wilwood Kit. Is it;

 

-Bleeding (How much of a pain is it to bleed the VW calipers? Are we talking just the extra 5 minutes or so to unbolt them, or is there some other complexity to it?)

-Cost difference ~$500

-Turning the hubs down or not

-Weight of aluminum vs cast iron caliper

-E-brake cable? Turbo vs OE?

-Both are single piston calipers, correct?

-Are the rotors roughly the same dimensions?

-I believe I read the pad is either the same or very similar. Is that correct?

 

What other considerations are worth mentioning?

I used the Ireland rear disks in my track car and was very satisfied with them.  I used the aluminum calipers and did run a bias valve as they recommend. I can’t remember for sure but I think the calipers were from a General Motors vehicle??  I’d highly recommend them for track use.  Not sure disk are really needed for street use though...upgrading to E21 drums would probably be a cheaper solution and offers better braking than the standard 02 drums.
