700 engine disassembly

I am tearing down my sport engine. I had to make a puller to pop the centrifigual advance off the armature taper.

Then another puller to pop the armature off the crank taper.

A common puller got the front bearing off.

Now I am faced with buying, building or borrowing a Matra 536 to get the timing gear off.

And here is the engine as it waits for the tool.

I have to get to both slingers. Seems someone drilled three little holes in the outside of each one. Not good.

Regards, Ray

Ray,

Are you going to have someone replace the rod bearings?  Who have you chosen?

Scott,

I don't know that they need replacing. They seem ok just by feel. If the crank needs repair it will go to Germany.

Hi Ray,

I didn't know how deep you were going in your rebuild.  If the rod bearings need replaced, the crank has to come apart to replace the roller bearings.  There are some BMW motorcycle shops in the States that are capable of doing the process.  Good luck, Scott.

Elliott doesn't trust any US shops for this. Get a rebuild from Germany for about a grand, you send your core back.

Didn't work so well for my Martini. I think when I get it apart I'll have Tinney or one of the US shops fix it for me.  :-(

Steve,

Didn't work so well...? Is that a German crank rebuild you are referring to?

Yep. After just a few laps I have a single cylinder 700 engine. The other piston ain't moving. Hope to get it out of the car and back down to Tinney once he has room for it.

I need to get a sport piston in order to reverse engineer it. I can make cast duplicates which would be good for non-racing restorations.
