Cost to repair 1973 2002?

The seller said it has a salvage title and when he bought it 15 years ago the seller said a new engine was installed.

 

I didn't know where to look for the engine number, not that I could have found it, pretty greasy.

 

Thanks for tip on Wolf, looks possible.

 

I will research the sunroof fix, somewhere I read that parts are hard to find.

The one stamped on the inner passenger fender should be the original. The metal tag on the fender and the steering column one can be removed.

Your 2002 is a big step in being cool even if it doesn't have AC, that other car in the garage looks pretty cool too.

that is a nice- looking car.  Drive it.  A lot.

You have great roads, go see how it does.

 

The rust it has will be involved to fix, (it always is, and those spots are

both cosmetic AND hard to fix) so fall in love with the car first,

fix the rattles, buzzes, the brakes (they always need it)

get the little things sorted out, stop the water leaks (which is WHY it rusted there)

the wind whistles, put nice tires on it, take it to Laguna, take it to the beach,

take it up into the mountains, have fun.

 

Then, when you can hardly bear to be without it for a day,

fix the rust.  So you'll be well- motivated.

Great advice. He was asking $9,500, I offered him $7k, he said he already reject a similar offer.  I like your approach, take care of the mechanicals, which I can do, drive it for a year, then chase the rust.

 

If after a year I not enjoying the car, then sell it. Probably get out of it OK, if the prices keep rising.  We do have some great roads, I have a 64 MGB and a 2013 Boxster S that allows me good fun.

None of the photos allow any indication of just how bad the rust may be.

 

It could be a $1500 car, based on what we've (not) seen.

I spend an hour poking around  underneath, floor boards and rockers have no rust. Worst is the spare trunk, doors good. I lifted the rear seat, good there too.

Front end and steering work but are sloppy. Runs ok and shifts good, clutch is light but works. Oily underneath but no drips, probably never cleaned in 25 years.
