Cost to repair 1973 2002?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've found a 1973. The spare tire area is rusty with holes, sunroof doesn't work, some rust in the lower read fenders. Floor boards seem ok.   Lot's of electrical issues. Three different vin #s. Drivers seat bottom ripped, seats are tired.

Mileage unknown.

What would be a good budget for those fixes?  I'm just trying to create a driver for vintage tours, etc.

Cheers

Tim

9 years ago I had roughly the same question. Got my ‘75 for free so good baseline.

But $25,000 later everything is new, fresh, working and pretty

Depends on your final goal and budget and patience. $25K over 10 years is only (!) $2500 a year and $200 a month!!

You deserve it!!! At least these are my justifications and tainted mathematics?

Yea, that’s a tough question.. I’d say anywhere between $2000-$30000..haha.sort of.. pictures would help. If you’re from Capitola and the car is too then rust can be a big issue being so close to the salty ocean spray.. take it bit by bit.

Yes the car was originally from Aptos.  Some photos here:  https://photos.app.goo.gl/4OZsEtXQvmgxOJ1Y2

I plan to do most of the work myself(old retired guy, over the last four years got a 1970 Karman Ghia and a 914 up and running).

Love the comment about 30 cents an hour.  Hey it's a hobby , like golf. you pay yer $75 to play and don't expect them to hand you $100 when you walk off the course.

If I can break even for the cost of parts I feel like a winner,

Any sources for a spare tire/trunk replacement metal and sunroof parts?

Cheers

Spare tire wells are NLA.

Walloth Nesch will be your friends when it comes to sheet metal parts.

There was a post about a month ago... or three, where someone showed a spare tire well replacement piece they'd found.  It only ran up the edge about 3/4", but typically, the rust is in that portion.

Hey, I found it with the first search attempt ! ! by putting [ spare tire well replacement ] in the search bar, for --"all content"--

That feels like a small victory : )

From the pictures the car doesn't look too bad.  Seats have been reupholstered, but a good job.  The rust on the trailing edge of the rear wheel openings can be repaired either with a patch panel from W & N or by cutting out the lip of an otherwise rusted out front fender.

My guess on the sunroof is that one of the cables has broken so that when you try to crank it open, it jams.  Lotsa archive articles on how to fix that.

2002 wiring is pretty simple; get a blowup wiring diagram for a '73 and start tracing.  But first remove and thoroughlty clean all 12 fuses--if the ends look even a little corroded, replace 'em.  That may solve at least some of your electrical problems.

A puzzlement:  you say it has "three VINs"  I can understand a different engine number from chassis number (they matched from the factory), but what's the third VIN?  Surely the stamped VIN
on the fender matches the VIN on the nearby aluminum plate.  If they don't match, I'd be surprised that you got a title...

Keep us posted on progress--and welcome to the '02 fraternity/sorority.

Hi Mike, yes the Vin stamped on the right side top of wheel well( in the engine compartment), the metal tag next to it , and the vin above the steering column are all different numbers..

2587991+, 2589149, and 2589114, weird, Not sure it matters.

The seller said it has a salvage title and when he bought it 15 years ago the seller said a new engine was installed.

I didn't know where to look for the engine number, not that I could have found it, pretty greasy.

Thanks for tip on Wolf, looks possible.

I will research the sunroof fix, somewhere I read that parts are hard to find.

Glad to join this bunch of gear heads.

Cheers

Tim

The steering column number being different isn't surprising, as the original panel probably sun-rotted and a PO didn't transfer the little VIN plate.

The engine number is on a flat boss just to the rear of the starter motor where it bolts to the block.  Scrape off all the crud and all will be revealed.  Hopefully it will match one of the other numbers!

At least all the numbers you quoted are from 1973; the 2587991 is probably Dec 72 /Jan 73 production; the 25891xx VINs are later, probably Feb or Mar 73.  Wonder which one your car really is?  Guess you'll have to go with what's on the title...

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
