DIMMABLE LED CLUSTER LIGHTS

just wanted to share a recent small victory

i was able to find small wedge-style LEDs that work great with the dimmer switch ...

it was not perfectly plug-and-play ... but it was pretty darn easy once i sat on the problem for a bit ... so here it is:

the only dimmables i could find are here:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078VD399J

about 2$ a bulb ... so not a bad price

they are cast in silicone or urethane or something like that ... which is fine ...

the issue was their height (see images)

they are fine on the 'left' side of the gauges because they can go full-depth

but they did not engage the 'ground plate' of the white plug on the 'right' side of the cluster (behind the clock OR the tach)

so ... what i did was remove the white wedge-base and folded over the leads until they were short-enough and thick-enough to work with the white plugs

AND ... the silicone was a great way to keep everything in place in the white plug

everything sits wonderfully in the cluster ...

i has a jerry-rigged version a few nights ago to confirm the dimming ... before i altered them and rendered them un-returnable

i'll post a video of the dimmage once it gets dark

so ... in short ... if you have LEDs all over your cluster but wish they could dim ... buy these ... 10$ and bit of bending and your done

images below likely tell a better story than my words ...

YMMV

cheers

geoff

I tried many many different LEDs and was never happy until I bought a cluster redone by a company that does a lot of e30 gauges. The problem I had is that LEDs light don’t fill in all the areas of the cluster like standard bulbs so you got a lot of dark spots.  What they did for my cluster was open it and put LEDs all around the gauges not using the spots the stock lights were in at all.  This gives even lighting all around the gauges and not just spots of light. I kept trying to get brighter and brighter LEDs to overcome this and it never worked like I wanted. Always dark spots.  Now it’s got even and bright lighting all around the speedo and tach.

i have serious cluster-envy with what you have ...

i think i saw that post a while ago ... bravrest?

clearly some very professional work!!!

maybe if you ever have it out ... can you take some picture of what the backside looks like?

will give an idea of what the illumination scheme is

yeah ... it still has hotspots that 50 year old lighting schemes have ...

but the intent with my 'upgrade' was a 'simple' plug-and-play with LEDs in place of tungsten ...

and since LEDs are notoriously not very dimmable ... i was just happy to find something that worked

cheers and happy weekend

Didn’t want be a downer lol.  I simply was stating that I tried a lot to just replace those bulbs and gave up. Lol. Yeah bavrest is where I got it.

not in ANY way a downer ...

great to have a wide range of options for everyone to be aware of ...

from dimmable tungsten to led to dimmable led to bravrest ... and there are likely even more options ...

cheers

finally ... here is a video of the dimming:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/jgbaVDzGC5CkyGAV2

the phone makes it look brighter ... and whiter ...

it is more warm that in the image

but the range of dimming is not perfect ...

i may fiddle around with a secondary dimmer (or just a resistor?) to lower the whole range a bit

have not done any legit nightime out-of-the-city-lights driving yet ... so this is not a huge concern

cheers
