Paint color? Chamonix vs Fjord Blue

Hey all, got a little informal poll for you, so feel free to vote. Here's what I need to make a call on: so I've got a '76 2002 that all the body work is now completed. Runs and drives great, extensive work put into suspension/brakes/etc. Like a quarter burning a hole in a teenagers pocket, I really wanna just drive the car(read: I really don't wanna pull the engine). At one point, the engine bay was painted a sky blue-ish color, which is most closely matched to fjord blue. the rest of the body is primer. i pulled the factory code from BMW and it was chamonix. so, my decision: A) go with the white, but the engine bay doesnt match, B) go with the fjord blue, and the engine bay matches pretty close, or C) some third option i'm overlooking. thoughts? i'm not gonna flip/sell it, so the non-factory paint color is only an issue for my kid in 50 years when he sells his dads $2M vintage beamer. thanks for votes!

You know this is a totally objective question...but my 2 cents is: original color. My father instilled in me from a young age that it is just plain bad luck to change the color of a car. Change the color of a car, and the gates of hell open, and unleash electrical/mechanical gremlins that plague your car forever! =)

I’d pick whichever color I liked better since it’s staying in the family.

If you go chamonix you could alway paint the engine bay a few years down the road when you have to restore the car from all the fun you’ve had on the road enjoying it now.

hmmmm, you can likely guess what I chose, I am more of an original-ist, but I did a color change from Malaga to Fjord, and an interior change from beige to black, so I didn't stick to the original colors.

 

the engine bay can be painted when you dive into the major overhaul at some point in the future, and there are pretty good masking off points to make a clean shot of it.

 

if you go with a color change, I'd take all the color off the exterior of the car (which I did), since little chips show through the original color, and it looks like crap.

I vote Chamonix, do it right the first time.  You could do the engine compartment at a later time but at least the outside will be right.

I, too, am an “original color” guy, but if you’re not going with original, pick a color you love!

 

I’ll be frank: choosing an exterior color simply because it’s not too different from an old, non-original color in the engine compartment seems pretty lame to me! Chamonix and Fjord are great colors for an ‘02, but you seem fairly indifferent to both. If you’re not going original and are not too keen on Fjord, and assuming your car still has its original navy blue interior, how about Polaris (silver) or Pastellblau (light/medium blue)? Either of those choices would allow you to preserve a factory color combo....

Im partial to fjord. It’s what I have. If I was doing a color change I’d probably go pastelblau. My fjord...

If not original color, then the possibilities are wide open. Don't limit yourself by the current state of the engine bay (as JMR_1602 said earlier).

Or a modern day color.

 

If you really just want to drive it, you could consider wrapping it in the color of your choice. Then tackle paint a few years down the road. Would also give you the chance to try out a color for a few years before committing.

My vote is Chamonix.

 

The engine bay is one fairly easy project to fix....but what about the interior, doors, trunk, trunk lid, hood, and underbody?  Are those parts still the original color?

And....the Fjord metallic is a two-stage paint job. Need a really good paint shop to get it right.

Always, always, ALWAYS go with whatever color YOU want/like best, first and foremost!!! That said, while I never care if a car is ITS original color, I do kinda like 2002s sticking to AN original 2002 color.  Plus, you can get a proper new color sticker for whichever (factory available) color you do go with:

So paint it Inka or Taiga if you want; if you're keeping the car, make it what you want! There's no such thing as a 'bad' 2002 color after all!
