Only the automatic 2002s had neutral safety switches (a Federal requirement that went back to the dawn of automatics in the early '40s, IIRC).  Manual cars did not.  However, I suspect that the wiring harness for US cars was the same for manual and automatic, carbureted and tii cars, with add-on harnesses for specialized bits.  For example, on 72 and 73 carbureted cars, if you peer up under the dash, just above the hood release handle, you'll see an unused, insulated male terminal connected to a wire.  That's the feed for the electric fuel pump on a tii.  And I suspect there's an unused terminal somewhere under the dash for both the automatic's neutral safety switch, and the illumination for the automatic's shifter.  

 

As an aside, a Federal requirement sometime in the early 90s (after my 91 318 was built) requires a switch built into the ignition wiring that prevernts the starter from engaging unless the clutch is disengaged.  So it's kind of a neutral safety switch for stick shift cars--but that happened 20+ years after the last '02 left the factory.

Let’s be clear.  This item was not installed by the factory on ANY 2002.  It was not an option.  It did not exist when the last ‘02 rolled off the assembly line.

 

If someone removed it from an ‘02, then someone added it to that ‘02 long after the ‘02 left the factory.
